Does it pull up toward you along the column axis (as in telescoping) or up from the floor? Hopefully the later and have you checked the bolts that hold it up? (I am assuming that it is similar to my 82)

The steering column is collapsable, and your pin/clip that holds the column has broken. One needs to be careful when removing the steering wheel so this doesn't happen. Do a search on the subject and you will find pics posted by Wackyracer, iirc. Repairs for this are varied, but drilling and installing a soft aluminum or plastic rivet may remedy the problem.

The other option is replacing the entire column.

Mine does not pull toward me like a telescoping wheel. It moves up on down from the floor I guess is the best way to describe it.

Does it move side to side also? Could be a bad bearing, very rare, or the column may not be bolted tight enough, (the saddle bracket), under the dash. The later may account for up and down with little or no side play.

Yes it does move side to side as well.Is this a tough fix?Is it impossible to get parts for this vintage?

As trochoid said, check your bolts before you worry about getting column replaced or repaired - it is a 30 s check. Check to see if the column outer housing is moving relative to the dash as you move the column side to side - hopefully the answer is yes and it takes you another 30s to tighten the bolts that attach the column

You could always look here for the parts as well as eBay should you really need them...

The outer housing for the column is not moving with the steering wheel.I think it is the bearing. Is the bearing easily replaced? Can I get one still new?Is it the same as the FB?If so I have a parts car I can grab it from, but it would be a shame to take that one apart as the whole steering system has really low miles on that one,and I was hoping to take the box out again, and keep the whole system as a back up.I am guessing the 79-80 models are different though.Am I right?
