Stereo Wiring. Please Help.

Okay, I just bought a 1985 rx-7. And it doesn't have a radio in it at all, but whoever took the last one out simply cut the wires, taking the wiring harness with them. This means that rather than being able to simply get a kenwood/mazda adapter, I have to figure out what each mazda wire is and crimp them one at a time. All of the wires but one (there are twelve total) are blue with a stripe. It looks like some have small brown chevrons on them also.
If anyone knows what each of these wires are for, please let me know!!!

man i had the EXACT SAME DEAL! i got my car and it had been cut just like yours. here's what i did. i found the power source by turning the key to the on position and tapping each wire against a ground. the one that sparked real bad was it! LOL!!! then from there, the neg. was a given. and find the speaker wires was just a matter of turning the cd player on and listening to which speaker it came out of while messing around. took me about 2 hours. but it works great now!

Dude... One word... Voltmeter.

Or the slightly less useful, but also cheaper two words... Test Light...

I also had the same deal... No connectors, just bare wires...

Hook one end of your test light or multimeter to the car's body...

Test one wire with the key OFF... That'll be your memory backup... It goes to the battery constantly...

Test one with the key ON... That'll be your radio power on...

Test one with the lights on... That'll be your illumination... If you don't need it, cap it off or you'll kill your dimmer switch.

Isolate those and remember which they were.

Now hook the test light to a known power source, such as one found above... and probe the additional unknown wires... Whichever one shows a reading on the multimeter or lights the light is a ground... I don't believe the RX-7 has a ground, meaning you use the body as a ground...

Anything left over is power antenna and speakers...

Speakers, you use a AA battery. Hold one to one side of the battery, tap the other wires to the other side of the battery one by one... You'll hear a click from the appropriate speaker... Isolate those... You'll have to remove the speaker to check polarity...

Or you can goto www.the12volt.com and get the Mazda wiring reference.

A word of caution.. In my 83 there were 2 stock amplifiers, one under the driver's seat and one under the driver's storage bin. Connecting your speaker outs from your new deck to the inputs of those amps could cause major problems. I never could figure out how to wire up an after market deck to those, so I just bypassed them and wired the speakers directly after figuring out the ignition +12, the fulltime +12 and the ground.

Hope that helps a bit

alright......as far as the wires to the individual speakers, your best to just run new ones

same problem here.

just rewired it the easy way. grabed power from the ignition. then all time power to the battery. then tapped into a ligh source so the deck would auto dim when the headlight came on. got some 10 gauge wire from home depot cheap. and just rewired the new infinite perfects.

IMO new wire makes all the difference.

Carl.

ok. why is my name poping up at TIERS? who is this? i am CARLRX7!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! ahhhh wtf..

10 guage wire for speakers is huge, you don't even need 14 guage for subs, and they can put out 1000W on that.
