circuit city quoted me at 350 bucks to put in a new head unit... said it has to be rewired because of the common ground.. the guy was a moron though he said the head was only putting out 5 watts to my 8" MTX's with tweets in the back, but they bump. anyone know about that? common ground, etc

I have an '80's aftermarket analog "head unit." No cassette, no 8 track, no cd. So sad. If anyone has a stock ultra kitchy cool head unit sitting around I'd be glad to purchase it from them

A headunit should not be running 8" subs. You need an amp for that.

I have the stock GSL radio/tape/equalizer in my car. I spliced into the wiring on the radio though and put a line in on the system. There is now a 1/8" jack in the glove box that you can hook up things to. I have been known to have a laptop on the passenger seat playing music, or watching a DVD in the car using the sound system. I am on stock speakers in the rear, and new ones in the front. Sounds ok to me for what I listen to.

Hopefully soon I will get my 2 8" sub boxes made (making foam molds right now) and get that wired in. Should help alot, and I can then change out the rear speakers to better ones.

its not running subs, its 8" speakers. and i hooked them up to make sure the speakers worked because i was buying them from someone to run with an amp later on. when i hooked them up i noticed the tweets on the front of the boxes and they sounded alright. so i left them for now, i dont listen to the radio though. i plan on buying a CD player and using my 2 amps to run 8"s and 10"s. so for now they are sitting there wired in. but i dont even bother with the radio. id rather not be attacked by obnoxious ads while im in my own car.

anyone know anything about the common ground baloney? has anyone worked with this? obviously anyone who has gone aftermarket stereo knows about this so someone please give me some info...

A common ground system uses a series of wiring to connect all your grounds better. Being that our cars are mostly aluminum, they are not electrical ground friendly. This would solve that by running basically a ground strap to all your components. This will put all components on the same Ground Level. This will ensure that there is no humming within the system. This is usually only done on extremely high end systems where audio quality is the goal, or extremely powerful systems, that would destroy our cars. Basically, it means that you don't need it. If you do end up putting in an amplifier, and have problems with hums/thrums then you would want to install this setup.

Thanks,

I use a $70 Durabrand from Wal Mart. All I needed was the harness to put it in, and it has a remote and can read MP3. Puts out decent sound out of the two speakers it came out with.

For normal everyday use, that CD player is great. I don't need to break windows with my stereo. (technically, our car's have quadrophonic sound, not stereo, btw)
