Stereo problem?

I recently got the stereo/radio from a GSL/SE, the one with the digital read out. I used it to replace the old dial type that came in my 84 GS. The old one sounds good, but I just liked the look of the digital one. I have also previously added an equalizer, both were an easy install, just plug and play.

My problem is, when I replace the old dial one with the old digital one, the sound goes from good, to poor. It sounds like I have blown speakers, the bass sounds terrible. Also, it is not as loud. It has to be the stereo, because I put it in, sounds bad, took it out and replaced with original dial one, sounds good, put digital back in, sounds bad.

No matter how much I play with the eq, it does not seem to help.

Any suggestion?

Find another radio. Chances are I have one but I never test them before parting a car. Now, assuming you installed System 1 in Sec. 15, p. 62 of the 85 FSM, did you also install the balancer? I'm guessing that's the joy stick which has an extra wiring harness. Without it the speakers may not be getting the needed power.

Yes, when I put the EQ in, I also put in the joy stick.

On the back of the radio, there is 3 connections. One for the plug from the EQ then two for the plugs coming from the amps. One is white, other black. I plugged both in. The radio I got had a plastic plug in the hole where the white amp connect goes, do you think it was there for a reason, to keep anyone from plugging that connect in? Does the Digital radio already have enough power and not need both amps plugged up?

Was wondering this because Im pretty sure the guy would have just took radio out and sent it to me. He would not have had an extra plastic plug laying around to put in the hole???

Not terribly familiar with the radio/stereo system, I have to rely on the manual. All the EQ does is adjust frequency output to the speakers. You will need both amps plugged in, the front one under the glove box and the 1 in the rear bins.

do you have both amps? the etr setup has 2 amps, some of the others only have one, or different ones.

also the antenna is picky on these things

those are the only things i can think of, i do have plenty of decks and amps if you need

Yes, I have both amps under the storage boxes. Do you think the antenna would cause my issues?

Do you have any of the GSL/Se radio/stereo units?

The stereo setup you are describing only has ONE cable leaving the radio that goes to the joystick which then splits and goes to BOTH amps... Mine has the little plastic plug on the front amp out, and only the rear amp out should be used with the joystick as far as I know...Also, maybe it's the joystick and not the radio that is bad? If hooked up properly, you can't fade with the radio itself, only the joystick. Hope this helps.

Thanks, Im going out right now and unplug the white amp and see what happens. I was wondering why it had the white plug in it. I knew the guy I got it from would not have one of those laying around. I was pretty sure he just took it out and sent it.

Thanks, Ill let you know what happens.

Well, it did not work. I left the white amp plug out though. I know it has to be in the radio part itself because if I take it out and put my GS dial type one in, it really sounds good for a 25 year old system. I just do not understand what is happening when I put the GSL type in. The amps, joystick, eq are all the same but the bass sucks. Sounds like I have blown speakers. I think I may try to buy another and see what happens. Thanks for your help though.

Do you get sound from all four speakers when it sounds really bad with the suspect radio? Can you isolate one speaker at a time with the joystick?[when it sounds bad] Just curious...Good luck!
