Steering wheel play?

Hey all, Just bought a honey, a 85 GSL it has 53,000 on it, to drive it is just like it would be driving it as it was new other than a little play in the wheel. Its manual steeing how do i got about adjusting it? Yeah a Older couple had this car since it was new. So everythings great on it. It spent all its like in a garage. I've very happy with it. I still drive my 87 turbo as my daily driver the 85 sits under the car port with the car cover on it, i drive it here and there, Just love taking it out and cruzing around in it.

Might also check those idler arm bushings first, I had some play, the bushings were completely GONE. Fixing that helped lots.

you might be missing the spring/retainer that holds the steering wheel in place on the splines.

My steering is a little playful. It nees all new bushing though. I also pull to the right under breaking don't know what thats about? Could be my comp break pads though. They squeal like hell when cold lol.

Is it obvious when this rod is broken? i assume the steering would totally go out? i knew nothing about it and have punched my steering wheel hard a few times and played "drums" on the outside ring with my fists while listening to hatebreed.

Playing drums on the wheel *shouldn't* harm anything. I play drums on the wheel all the time. I think it's cool in this car because the vibration goes all the way through to the unibody in this car, as opposed to the dull "thud" sound the steering wheel on my Dodge Shadow made.

Before you start messing with the steering gear, check your tie rod ends, pitman arm, lower control arm ball joints including the tires itself. a slight change in the adjustment MAY cause you more headache in the long run.

If the car really has only 53,000 miles on it the steering shouldn't be very loose, but compared to the steering you're used to in the 2nd gen it may feel that way. The 2nd gen has rack & pinion but the 1st gens all used a recirculating ball-type steering box that's about as technologically advanced as 8-track tape players. Whichever samurai at Mazda made the decision to go that route should do the right thing and fall on his sword.
