steering column question

Are these steering columns rebuildable(are parts available), I have alot of play in mine when turning wheel left and right aswell as when applying pressure upwards their is about a half inch of play. Havnt torn into it yet due to one of the afmkt steering wheel screws is stripped out so I have to bust out the eaze-out before I can find the culprit. Any thoughts would be appreciated.

couple threads about both types of play. bushings and whatnot fix alot of the slop.

Jeff20B had a good thread about the forward backward play and how he fixed it.

Try and find it for you

Do a search for wonder steering. There has been quite a few posts about removing the slop from the steering box. You may also want to check your idler arm for play as well.

As for the telescoping of the steering column, the shaft is a two piece system, designed to collapse in an accident. There is a nylon safety rivet joining the two halves, which has been known to sheer. You can drill out the old one and replace it with either an aluminum rod or a nylon rod.

its not telescoping yet(although my brothers' 88 is...), aparently I was searching for the wrong thing but I will start reading more into the FSM. I have to install the multifunction/headlight switch at the same time so it will be like knocking out two birds with one stone.

ohh, then clunk noise and play appears to be entirely in the column from what I can tell, also the movement is not a telescoping movement but a 'tilt' movement as if the car had a tilt wheel...

Only thing I could think that would cause the tilting would be the bracket that holds the column in place under the dash has loosened.
