Steering box. Repair? Rebuild? Replace?

My 85 GSLSE with 223,000 kms on it the steering doesnt centre anymore.

What do folks do inwhen this happens? is the part rebuildable? can you get a new or refurbed unit?

I read about a rack and pinion conversion kit that had very high marks, except for the company that build and sells it h as a pretty crap reputation for customer service.

What are my options? whats the most poplular fix? is tehre more than one Rack and pinion solution out there?

Have you checked all of the steering components for wear? And what do you mean, "doesn't centre anymore?"

The steering sector is the last steering component you should adjust/repair/replace. Once all of the other components are up to spec/replaced, then look at the sector. Lack of centering can be caused by several different worn components besides the sector.

The frontend is tight on both of my GSL SE's, yet one has "wander" steering and the other has "wonder---ful" steering. I plan on doing the box adjustment on one, perhaps Spence would like to participate in my experiment first.

Failure to center may just be an alignement issue. Do you have lots of free play in the steering wheel too?
