Static in power/volume ****

85 GSL stock radio/cassette deck/equalizer. When I push the volume **** in to power the radio on and off, and when I turn the **** to raise/lower the volume there's an annoying crunching static from the speakers, can this be fixed? Does it just need to be cleaned up? Haven't had much luck with the search on the app.

Could be a condenser gone bad. Replace the distributor condenser. You could have a bad ground too, or your radio is just bad.

That's what I was thinking, just didn't know what they were called.

I followed a very detailed tutorial on this website to clean my potentiometers last year. Worked like a charm! I had the same symptoms.....

I like the old radio, and the equalizer works very well too. I just need to fix this and upgrade the stock speakers and I know it will sound good.

I recently installed Polk's. The front was a much more noticeable improvement than the rear. I then put Polk tweeters on the dash. That really made a huge improvement.
The head unit is alpine, however. The car came to me with an old alpine cassette deck.

About time for me to do speakers, too - my old Blaupunkts are starting to buzz, probably the suspension has gone bad. Pity; they were good speakers, but 15 years is a pretty good ROI.

My front left stock one does the same thing, the cardboard dome has a tear. They put such a nice sounding system in the car but could have done a better job with the speakers, these things look like speakers from a 50's TV. The rear ones sound good but they're old polks.
