IT STARTS!!! ...Well kind of

I went out and started the rex after its long winter nap and (just like it did before winter) it was hard to start due to flooding.

Now, to solve this problem should I adjust the mixture screw?

I know very little about carbs so, how do I do that?

I know there has been a lot of start-up questions lately so I am sorry for the redundancy of the topic, but thanks for your help in advance!

Carbed engine should not flood easily unless:
The floats are incorrectly set.
The plugs are bad.
The plug wires are bad.
You are pumping the hell out of it.

A few factors/questions that will help us help you...

do you use the choke? if so how far do you pull it?

how many times do you pump it?

when was your last tune up?

has it always been this way or did it develop?

depend on weather?

does it do it hot? or just cold?

Make sure the plugs are clean and dry first. Then dump a small amount of oil down the carb primaries. It should be enough to fire it up. Then watch all the smoke.

1. yes, usually all the way

2. once or twice at most

3. did tune up about last August (I stopped driving it in September)

4. it has been this way since I bought it last summer, the previous owner had the same problems.

5. yes, it is harder to start when it is cold and or damp out

6. it usually, is when the engine is cold.

It starts right up if I spray starting fluid down the carb and pull out the choke.

Thanks again.

The plugs always foul right up.

What causes this problem? the flooding I mean.

It very likely is a carb problem, although a weak ignition system can lead to plug fouling. If you're interested in doing some reading, there is lots of info about carbs and ignition mods on this forum. Use the search function.

Well I have searched quite a bit before, but didn't find what I was looking for, but thanks for your help anyway.

I'll just use starting fluid in it for a while until I get the time to test the ignition system.

What plugs are you using? I had similar problems changed to NGK BUR9EQP plugs and the problem went away.
