Starting (starter?) problems

I'm having a problem getting my 12A w/Weber 45DCOE to start. It's always been hard to start since I got it, taking a LOT of pumping while cranking.

Well, I thought all the cranking had fried my starter, it was kind of grinding and the positive cable gets pretty hot. So I replaced the starter, but it's still doing the same thing. What makes the + battery cable get hot? I thought that meant it was pulling too many amps, but it's new (I know no guarantee it's good.) Could it be a bad (-) battery cable?

Any thoughts on why I'd have to crank/pump so much? It doesn't have the "fuel enrichment device" on it but I've read Webers don't usually really need it.

I would try to clean the surface where the starter meets the trans, and also replace the ground wire from the batt to the body and add a better ground from the engine to the body.

The cable getting hot is a dead giveaway for a bad ground. Clean your cable ends at the battery and the starter then try again...

If all of your connections are clean and sound, the cable may be corroding internally. I recently had to replace mine due to this. The heating indicates either bad connections, or too much resistance in the wire.
