Starter shot?

Well its not often but every once in awhile i go to start my car and it will make a grinding noice when i try to start it. It does it about 2-3 times, and then it will finally turn over with no problem. I have a 83 GSL. Could it just be the solenoid?

Could be just the solenoid. Problem is that you (usually) can't buy just a solenoid. And anyhow they look hard to replace on modern starters. I think it's intended that you replace the whole starter since by this time the bushings and brushes are probably shot too. Be careful to get a good rebuild - sometimes rebuilds are done by meth addicts pretending to be mechanics. I got a good one from rockauto.com for about $90, delivered in 3 days.

I have a autolite starter for a 12a manual car that was used for only a few weeks (in my 85) and is in great shape for sale. PM me if interested.

Mine did the same thing. I had to replace the starter. Got it from the dealer for $60.
