Starter shimms?

I recently heard that if your starter is grinding the flywheel, you can buy shims to move the gear back to line up with the flywheel. My 85 fb spins up, then grinds, then starts. its bananas. is it worth it to try and shim the sucker? BTW the starter is brand new and im not dumb enough to eff that up.

There are no shims available for our application.

Inspect the teeth on the flywheel for damage. Also make sure that the starter bolts are tightened all the way and that the starter is all the way in the mount.

If those are good then you have a defective starter.

What I'd sugest is that the drive in the starter isn't meshing with the flywheel. Either the drive is the wrong tooth count or the drive is a cheap china drive and it's crap. Count the number of teeth on the drive.
You may even have a loose flywheel?!?!?! Check the flywheel to make sure it's not loose...........

I used to have a similar issue. I replaced both battery cables and that fixed it. It appears that it was due to a lack of amps getting to the starter. Hope this helps.
