Unhappy Starter problem...

Hey guys today my car didn't wanted to start. I needed to push start it and then when I try to start it up. It makes this weir turbin sound but no starting any idea? Could be that the started is dead for good?

If the started is dead then what is a good started to get and how much dose they normaly run for?

Sounds like your solenoid took a crap. The solenoid is what pushes the starter gear out so that it engages the flywheel. Without it, the starter just spins but doesn't turn the motor at all. You might try cleaning all of the wires on it first just to be sure, but you'll probably end up needing a replacement. Check the junkyards first, otherwise they can be a bit costly.

What is exacly a Solenoid? can someoen show me a picture of it?

By the way how this all happen I got off from work, I try to turn it on to warm up the car but it won't make any sound like to try to start the car. I tried many time but nothing. Then I just push the car and started it that way once it was warm i turn off the car and try to start it then I hear that turbing sound of something spining but not starting the car. So, I was force to push it again and start it so I can get home.

I guess that I would be better off replacing the entire thing just in case. So, what is the best starter for a 81 Rx7 12A Carb?

make sure you have a couple things, a good connection on it, then also make sure it has a good GROUND(very important) and there is a little tab that a wire connects to thats on the solenoid. ive had the problem that this thing is disconnected and it doesnt work right.

I guess I will have to lift the car up and check under it to make sure this connections are up. Beside that, I might end up getting a new starter I think because before I would turn the key and it not do anything until I turn it a few times and then it will catch up and start my engine. So, I am assuming the starter might be going I guess. Is been a while it haven't done that so i was suprice it didn't start last night.

Any recommendation if I should get OEM or aftermarket starter for it and which one should I go for if I have to replace my starter?

First thing I'd check is your battery connections and ground connections. These are the easiest.

ok I will do that aussiesmg, and see to make sure is all right. I did tight them last night so it should be fine. However, I am not sure what to really look for.

now that you see what it looks like. give the solenoid a good firm tap with a hammer, or a jack handle from the top. it might start working for while.

I should have mentioned this earlier, but my starter on cold mornings will sometimes fail to engage the first few times. I just keep trying it, and eventually it catches. Its a pain, but since it never fails to start I haven't gotten around to replacing it. If yours never engages, then you'd better chase it down.

Thanks Kentetsu, I just got a new Bosch Starter. I figure I should replace everything and clean everything under there. Now it starts like a charm. My first Rx7 Starter unistalled/ installed. YAY!
