starter interchangeability

so ive been told that my 80 sa trans and starter will work with my 85 12a engine and flywheel. but i've just found out that it may work for a while but since the teeth count on the starter are different between 80 and 85 it would eventually start jumping teeth and could break them. so can i use an 85 starter in the 80 trans or should i do something different?

Same flywheel tooth count from 74 to 92. Starter tooth count varies by year. Yet they somehow magically all work together!
