Question Starter Acting Up

My starter has taken to not engaging. It regularly does not engage the fly wheel properly. When I release the ignition, I get a wherrr. When it does engage the car starts right up. I am thinking that the selonoid on the starter may be going.

Anyone have experience/advice on this?

Funny because I am going thru the same thing right now. My starter did the same thing - turn ignition --> whirr!! I was able to get it going by banging on the starter/solenoid with a wrench. A few bangs got it to start. So I swapped the starter from my parts car (unknown age). It looked newer than the starter in my car but was also a reman starter - so not alot of confidence. It did fine for a few days but then yesterday the damn thing did the same thing. So im going to have my original starter tested at a autoparts store but Im not sure their tests will find what I believe to be a bad spot in the windings on the starter motor/solenoid. I replaced my battery cables and grounds in the last year and all connections are fine.

aye ... hand many cars that this happens to just because they are old cars. but my 7 does it right now.. i have a start in one of the bins just so i can change it out. i would just go and buy a new starter with silinoid and slap it on. but mine grinds... could be a bad spot in the fly wheel.. that aint good ... but i just don't think that it is being thrown out all the way to lock in place before it starts spinning.

if there's no crunching when the starter is engauged, then its either the starter solenoid or the wiring to.. Turns out the wiring to our starters can get buggery over time, and many reccomend replacing them before they act up. also check the cleanliness of all the connections to ensure corrosion isnt causing power loss

since your car starts right up, id imagine your solenoid needs some greasing or service.. the rx starters are really easy to rebuild.. IF YOU HAVE THE PARTS.. regular dc motor brushes wont work, you need ultra high current brushes designed for starters. that is all.

My car was doing the exact same thing...I pulled the starter and found that the starter gear was slipping on the shaft. Sometimes it would stick and turn the flywheel, and sometimes it would just slip and make the wheerrr noise...that noise btw is the shaft spinning insided the starter gear in the starter...just get a new one, or rebuild.

Yes! Every time someone says their starter is whirring and not engaging people just say solenoid. When infact a slipping drive is the logical explanation.

huh, that crap is happening to me too....i hate that, it dident happen to me when i had my old starter now that i have this new one it does that, my guess is that the teeth dont line up when you turn it off then when you go and start it again it hits and turns, then when you do it again it lines up and works fine....thats so lame i dont know why it dident do it before...its a consperacy!!

Just got mine back from the shop... I know, I could have done it myself, but between the subzero temps, gravel driveway, and having my '62 out of service too, I just went ahead and had it done. What's 70 bucks, right?
Ends up they charged me to try my extra starter and tell me that it wasn't any good when it spun on the testbench...
So I pay for a new starter plus remove and reinstall TWICE!!
