Spoiler for a Wide Body? Live Large or Not?
Spoiler for a Wide Body? Live Large or Not?
I’m getting my 7 w/ the IMSA wide body kit all spiffed up. Have a rear lip spoiler (as in photo) but am thinking a whale tail w/ the wide body. There are “lg” & “sm” whales from Wings West. I kinda like the bold, 911ish look w/ the kit. Stay w/ my minimal lip spoiler or go large? What do you think?

I'm going with the bomex whale tail made for the Supra. I might have to rig it to fit my car, but I should look pretty good.

I also faced that decision when I installed the widebody. My lip spoiler wasnt the right width(Mazdatrix/WingsWest) and it didnt look as trick to me as it did when I first got it.
I ended up going with an older Mariah wing from the GTO days of the 1st gen.Its made to match the GTO tube chassis cars, but still fits the stock car's curves and has the notch to get your fingers under the rear glass. It wasnt cheap though, and Mariah was unsure about being able to make it since they hadnt done one in ten years. They eventually had an outside source make it for them. Its definately original though,Ive never seen another car with one,and it got me into the Mariah gallery! It looks big in the pics, but it actually flows pretty well with the car's new lines, and its the perfect width.

Its the same wing used on the yellow and blue cars(one is Roger Mandeville's)
"The GTO I Racing Body Package is the same one used on the 1983, 1984 & 1985 IMSA GTU Championship winning Mazda RX-7s. Although this package was specifically designed for "tube-framed" race cars, it has been sucessfully applied to the standard RX-7 unibody chassis. It consists of a complete front clip (Airdam and front fenders), two rear fenders and two doorcaps. It is designed to accomodate up to 11"x16" wheels. This package has a single front radiator opening, and a softer front Airdam. "

Thats the price to be original.
Mariah has other whaletails that are "kinda" similar, they tried to sell me one at first, but I pushed with,"If you dont offer the GTO wing, then why is it on your website?"
Then I started to learn why they didnt have them. They had the mold, but nobody there had laid one out in years(or ever, apparantly)
But they came through and had it done, thats why I always speak well of Mariah.Great service, real rotorheads with LOTS of experience and years under their belts.Pricey,sometimes...but always quality!

Nothing wrong with WW 1st gen stuff.....where do you think Mazdatrix gets all their body parts?
My side skirts and rear skirt are WW,as was my old wing and front airdamn, which looked nearly identical to a Mariah narrow body kit.

I'd stay with the ducktail. It suits the car perfectly, IMHO. Most other spoilers don't, unless you've got a widebody kit to match. What I would suggest is a rear skirt from Mazdatrix to compliment the front air dam. And some side skirts.
I would delete the Targa band though. It really doesn't suit the car.

I missed the part where the car you're asking about already has the widebody. In that case the whaletale would look good. If you could get a supersized ducktail like Mazda used in IMSA that would be ideal though.

oh my goodness snapshot....please PLEASE don't get the whale tail WITHOUT the side wrap around part....it looks sooo wrong in my opinion. it just does NOT work....
get the same one, except with the wrap around sides. know what i mean? i even think its cheaper. check mazdatrix, im pretty sure they have both.
i used to have that wing on my 85, and i loved it. however, with my new car, i think im going to go with one similar to yours (snapshot), except the larger one.
that's my opinion

I face the same problem: what wing??? Right now I have a "small aero" wing (Mariah) but although I like the looks, it's not really what I want. I hate whaletales though... And of course ricer style alu surfboards aren't an option either.
Basicly, I think the large ducktales as used on old race cars (as posted above) look best.
