Spedo question.

Well my spedometer quit working again. First time it happend I figured it was the cable. Went through the motions and discoverd the cable wasn't broken so I moved to the next likely culprit, the gear in the trany. Pulled it out and noticed most of the teeth were gone in the middle of the gear. Thought "Ok, I'll put a new one in". Since the trany is out of an 88 (car is an 85 as was the old spedo gear). Went and got the gear out of the 88 end bit. When I went to put the trany in it was too long so I swaped over the end bit with the shifter from an unknown year 1st gen. Anyway got the new gear and saw that it was smaller and red but in good condition. The other was large and green. I went ahead and put the red one in hoping it would work and maybe correct the MPH as well since the old one was 6-10 mph off. It worked for awhile and now it too has decided to crap out on me. I haven't pulled the gear out to see what it looks like yet so I don't know if it's the same story as the other. Anyone have an idea why this keeps happening?
Did a search and read that it could be the guage. Perhaps that the gear in the guage had worn but I don't think thats the problem but what do I know, this is my first RX.

1st question is, did you drain the tranny to remove the old gear chunks? I can't help on the gears themselves, other than maybe you need to go with a 2nd gen cable. I'm not sure what the guys with the TII tranny swaps have done.

Yea, I waited 'till I had time to change all the fluids in the car. I didn't feel any bits in there. Thanks trochoid, I'll try searching for TII swaps and see what I can find.
