I've got an 82 Rx7. and i cant find ANY indication of what specific model i have.. (GSL, T2.. ect..). nothing on the car, nothing in the owners manual..

Do i have a specific model or is just a basic "Rx7"?

Im guessing its an S as GS, GSL, and GSLSE all had badges. That is of course assuming no one took the badge off

options should give the answer away but not an exact science. for esample I have all the GS options except a sunroof on my 79, even had the 5 speed. these cars are so old it is hard to tell what the PO's did to themand there isnt a papertrail either.

My 79 gs doesn't have a badge but has all the options. If a cars ever been repaired or repainted the badges are hastely removed and often damaged by dealers or body shops.

The FB's (81-85) were pretty consistant with a couple exceptions.

S model has rear drum brakes and usually no sunroof.
GS has drums, standard lighted key/cargo bins/hatch,power mirrors and often a sunroof.
GSL gets the rear discs and LSD, plus power everything, cruise and sunroof.
GSL-SE (84-85) has EFI engine,bigger brakes,wheel studs,14" wheels,ect.

there were no badges from 79-83 other than a GSL badge on each B-pillar for GSL models from 81-83. the rear badges started in 84 and were GS, GSL, GSL-SE.

if you have an 82, the easy way to tell what model you have is to first see if it has rear disc brakes and or power windows. if yes then you have a GSL. if no, then look to see if it has power mirrors. if yes then you have a GS. if no, its an S model.

Dave is correct, but he forgot the few special model SA's which also carried a B-pillar badge as a part of their package. The 79 "Limited", 80 "LS" and 80 "10th A/E"

its easier to work backwards. US models only...

the GSL-SE is 84-85 only, had a 13B with fuel injection, and different brakes/wheels and all the power options.

the GSL is 81-85. it always has a sunroof, rear wiper (it'll have the hole in the roof for the rear washer nozzle), rear disc brakes, all the power options, mirrors, windows, cruise control, AC.
for 81-83 leather is the only option, for 84-85 leather or cloth, and power steering or manual.

the GS is tricky. the 79-80 gs's get a 4 spoke steering wheel, 5 speed manual, rear swaybar. sunroof is an OPTION in 79-80, along with alloy wheels, and AC

from 81-85, the GS usually has a sunroof (not always), power mirrors, power trunk opener, map and key lights and alloy wheels. among other things.

the S model has nothing. the S model NEVER has a sunroof. it ALWAYS has manual mirrors. the S will never have a map light/key light. the S model is the only one after 81 to have steel wheels.

How sure are you about the GSL always having a sunroof? I'm well aware of the differences between models but I owned an 85 fora couple of years that had every GSL option, leather interior, power everything, rear wiper, but no sunroof. At first I thought one of the POs may have converted a GS but the washer nozzle and minty GSL badge made me think otherwise. I even came across a look-a-like FB locally that was IDENTICAL to my slicktop GSL which really got me wondering....

Thanks a lot for the replies!!

As far as options go, i've got a "hardtop" crank roof deal that i can remove. No rear wiper. I do have power mirrors. 4 spoke steering wheel. No power steering (<3). Drum breaks (which i want to GET RID OF (and replace with disc of course)). I had AC, but the compressor and components were removed for weight reduction from a previous owner.

So what im guessing or at least from what i'm hearing/reading i've got a GS?

Thanks everyone!!

Yep, GS.

I dont know the stats for trim levels sold, but it seems to me that there are more GS's than any other type 1st gen.
Might be that the 81-85 range (FB) was on average the years that saw the most RX's sold.Since the GS really didnt have a whole lot of standard extras beyond the base S model,I can see why most people would likely bump up to that level. By comparison, the standard GSL is fully loaded with few optional accesories and the SE is on a whole other level mechanically and performance-wise.
