speaking of locks...

ok so I push down the lock on my car slam the door and the damn thing pops back up, thus unlocking the door. If i shut the door i can put the key in and lock it. Is there something i'm missing? Just wondering how carl could've locked his keys in with my doors acting like that. oh its an 85 if it makes a difference.

you have to lift the handle while closing the door to have it lock.. he probably did it thinking he had his keys, i did it once as well...

Just fine anybody with another 1st gen and ask them to unlock it for you. The odds are about one in three that any random key will open it. We've played this game at club meetings before and I specifically carry three "special" keys in case anyone accidentally locks themselves out (it's come in handy before). If no one is handy, then just call a tow truck...those guys can slimjim the door for a small fee. If you have an autoclub, they would almost certainly cover the cost.

you guys should get a SOLEX DOOR LOCKS. Much better. I locked my keys in the RX-3 during SS7. I could get it to open. luckily, I left a cracck in the windows.

Trouble is Blake, that the PO put Ford locks on the doors and the hatch lock is roached. Turns out we had a slim jim at work. 30 seconds and it was open. Knowing the mechanism and experience with a slim jim (in my teenage years) made it a piece of cake.

So Mel, wheres my Solex locks?

Blake remembers. Even my REPU key works 1st gens. I think only Cosmo and maybe a few other models had a different style of key with slots in different areas.

Aftermarket locks. I have them in my car. The key is cylinderical so you can't open them with a screw driver. They look pretty cool too.

I'm planning on getting rid of my door locks completely and just having keyless entry and the one Solex for the hatch in case I can't get in.

Are those locks based on the same design as Kryptonite bike locks? If so, check this out...

I want to get rid of my door locks, too. and having one lock on the hatch is a great idea.

What makes them so easy to break into has nothing to do with the actual lock cylinders. You don't need to touch the lock at all. No need for a slimjim either: a paperclip, coathanger, or any piece of stiff wire will open it up in less than 5 seconds.

Thats a pretty feature on all Japanese cars up to the early 90's. I don't know which of the Japanese cars in the states came with the feature. I know the rx7 has this and I think my 240sx also had this type of door lock where you have to hold the handle up to lock it.

There's one feature that I would like to have on my car thats pretty common in Japan but I haven't seen personally here in the states and thats where the car won't let you lock your doors with the key in the ignition after you shut your car off.

That requires power locks. You need a relay hooked up the the unlock signal wire. Splice that relay into the little beeper that sounds when you leave the key in.

I wanna figure out how to modify the doors to be anti-slim jim. Some older BMW's and stuff have them. It's a simple metal plate welded inside the door covering the lock rods and other related mechanism that you hook onto with the slimjim...

Combine that with solex locks and you've got a pretty secure vehicle shy of window breakage and tow truckery.
