Speakers
Well,
Recently I ported over my Thunderbird's single 12 JL Audio Sub to my RX-7, big mistake.
The box is huge, it barely would fit and I definitely couldn’t see anything behind me. I took the speaker out and I'm free airing it right now in the little cubby holes behind the seats.
Is that were I should build a box at? The whole speaker doesn’t fit in, just some of it so some of it's still technically hanging out in the open.
Thanks,
Eric

If you're gonna take out the compartments anyways Pelezo, why not pull the whole tin piece and build a new box to bolt into place?
I've resolved that if I ever get a new sound system with subs they'll be dual-8"s just like Max has.

Well,
Technically I wouldn’t be taking out the old cubby holes, just kind of putting a piece of wood over the tops of them, caulking them, and then sealing it up with the speakers? I didn't want to do that but I definitely can't free air them for long.
The reason I'm free airing right now is because the front two speakers don't work at all and the rear two are blown and I hate it squeaking and rattling.
How hard would it be to just pull out the tin pieces and replace with something sealed? Maybe a fiber glass sealed box in each ones place pointing up wards on the deck with speaker guards?
Thanks,
Eric

I would think that making a plexi-glass box might be cool, and having a similar shape as the tin had... Just a thought. Speaker boxes are not my thing... Just wanted to point out how easy the tin and compartments come out.

You pull off the lids by unscrewing the black plastic with the lids open. Then you can pull the compartments out. Take off the carpet strip across the top, and then take the carpet clips off down the front. The carpet will then come off to reveal what is basically just two pieces of tin that overlap in the middle and bolt on the tops and front to the frame. A few bolts frees the tin...
If you haven't done this before you can see your bin rust from the inside. Also under there will be some sound padding/mats like underneath the rear carpet. Two amps are bolted down (one for each stock rear speaker), some tar sound shield on the floor and a wire harness across the front. With some work you could clean it up quite nicely I think.

Well,
I'm thinking of taking the bins out. Cutting a hole up in the top and sealing off the front of them to the regular vinyl (or using some covers from a junkyard for fan access, maybe a blow off fan like most computers have.
Then, have the top's sealed with Plexiglas, two blue neon lights on each side of the speaker and have the middle cut out for an amp. I can put little slides on top I'm sure so that peeping toms can’t see. The cubby hole box closer thing can be used to gain access to the speakers.
I don't know, I think I just may go with the conventional wood over the cubby holes with a circle cut out for now.
What about that hatch system, how does it fit? Is there any pictures?
Thanks,
Eric

Alright,
So, you're saying two 10 inch speakers, two tweeters?
Crap, do you think I could possibly mod the box for a 12? Or does the box come with them? I'd give the JL Audio for it possibly if it sounds good.
