Speaker advise, please

What would you guys suggest to replace the stock speakers, especially the front kick panel ones? I'm old, so I'm not really into subs, amps & stuff. Just want the best sound I can get with stock size speakers. I may put bigger than 5 1/4 in the back, however, if they fit without cutting metal. Whadda y'all think?

i think the rears are 6 1/2..least thats what they are in mine.....

anyway...in order to get the best sound...move the front speaker locations to the doors....and replace with 6 1/2 speakers

the sound is much nicer.....

theres a write up on the conversion around here somewhere..ill see if i can find it

I was thinking of doing that also.
Mounting it seams easy but doesnt it interfere with the window.

I may try that, but I was hoping someone would know of a good sounding 4 inch speaker, it there is such a thing.

hehehe...there are lots of good sounding speakers.....in 4"
but in the stock location they suck..cos all the sound just hits your ankles

hmmm...
here... http://www.monmouth.com/%7Erothe/rx7stereo.html

this should help...this tells you exactly where to put the 6 1/2's in the door to avoid the window...

hope this helps..

I'm old too and didn't want a sub so I put Soundstream SPL-45's in the front and Infinity Reference 652i's in the back. I also put an amp under the passenger storage bin.

Us old guys should get together and compare sound systems. Mine'll be in next week. I got 4" Rockford Fosgates for the front and 6.5" Infinity's for the rear. And get this..... an MP3 play'n Kenwood head unit. WooHoo! Now alls I gotta do is figure out how to wire this sucker up.

Eh.. no worries... 82transam says he'll help me.

wow thats a great link on the front door panel speaker location, thanks. ive got some blaupunkt 4's up front and some in back too, one of the 6.5's is blown. they came with the car. the 4's are just too weak to overpower my loud *** exhaust. as soon as i get some cash i guess i'll try the doo panel location and get a set of 4 6.5's. anyone know a better way to mount rear speakers easily? i was thinkin some 6x9's in boxes would fit pretty easy in very back and i coult put the carpet that dangles down over em too. what have you guys got in the rear?

Im old too (30) LOL I still gotta have a sub.. Not to go booming up the block but its nice to have a little impact to my music.. In the front of my 85 I have 5 1/4 IMPP Pioneer Premier speakers, in the back I have 6X9 Cerwin Vega's... But the stock size is 4 in the front and a 6 1/2 in the back...

The front you can get a 5 1/4 w/o cutting the metal you have to ditch the factory grill and cut the kick panel a little bit. Use the grills the new speaker comes with, turn the hood release **** to vertical position istead of horizontal and it will clear the grill...

For brands if you not super picky about the brands etc, go with some simple pioneer, or kenwoods. Available at Wal Mart or Sear's Good speaker for a reasonable price

ya, your welcome for the link, when i do my stereo overhaul (i cant hear mine very well over the loud exhaust either)..im just going to change the fronts....

i find the 6 1/2's are loud enough in the rear..the hatch glass deflects pretty much all the sound to the front anyhow.....

i love my stock stereo (upgraded gsl version..) but that damned joystick and lack of base...any base...is kinda lame...

i guess im an old fart now too eh (29)

I recently upgraded the Mound sound....I installed a Nakamichi 45Z cd player in the dash using a custom made Lexan panel. Looks great. I then added Boston Acoustic Rally 5 1/4" components in the stock front kick panel location. I didn't want to mess up my doors, trying to keep an "almost" stock look. I angle mounted the tweeters up to the ears. I still have some old 6 1/2" Polk so so speakers in the back, yet to be upgradeed. And I added a PPI 50x4 amp to power it all.

It sounds, really, really clean. Still lacking bass that I think it should have....going to add subs to the tailights later, but that's a whole nother animal, and been covered before.

Right on.

How do the old Rx7s cope with subwoofers, i was planning to put to 10inch subs in the spare wheel area but i am scared that the car will just rattle and the bass will be wasted??

Sounds good, Mike thanks!! You always seem to know what to do no matter what I ask!! I gotta get up there sometime with the rex.
Anyway, the sony 5/14's at walmart sounded a bit better to me than the pioneers, guess I'll go with that and an inexpensive head unit. Gonna put 'em in the kick panels, too, just had my door panels re-done, don't want to cut on them just yet. Might change my mind later, though.
Thanks for all the great advise!!

I have two 8"'s behind my seats in the storage bens, with the amp mounted between them. It's loud enough to make your ears bleed, but it dosen't shake the car, or sound like your some 16 year old trying to pick up chicks with a trunk rattle.... i mean bass.

Damn right I will. It's easy

As for Speakers, I have a set of Polk ex402a (4") in the stock front locations, they sound just fine. I've been in a lot of big price-tag sound quality built cars and mine is pretty darn good. Putting the speakers in the doors looks dumb IMO.

For all of you who say your "too old" for an amp/sub think again. My friends dad (52 years old) has a frigiin awesome system in his Maxima (cost a pretty penny too). Built for quality but that thing hits hard too.

I'm currently running a Pioneer head with a four channel Sony amp pushing Bostwick tweeters mounted on the dash and Sony 4"s, and two Sony 12" subs with a 600watt Sony amp. It's loud as all hell when you turn it up, but thanks to the tweeters it still maintains a nice clean sound. As far as rattle goes, i loosend the bolts on the heat shield slightly and now the only thing that rattles is the gas lid, and it only does it when you really crank it up, in which case you can't hear it over the music anyway. I want to fit some 6x9s in the back, but it really isn't necessary. The four inches work fine as long as you've got a good pair and run some decent power to them.

I've an '85 GSL-SE with the stock tape deck, equalizer, and radio DIN units going out to a dual amp. The joystick to balance between speakers is cute, but the right side speakers don't make a peep.

Where is the dual amp located (for removal) and does anyone make a dash box to fill in two of the 3 DIN slots that'll be left gaping open when I replace the tape deck? Instead of simply plugging the hole with a large slab of black plastic, as my local stereo shop wants to do, I thought a nice little 5-sided box to hold CDs or other junk would be more apropose.

Anyone?

If you can find the box out of a base model it will fit under a standard head with just a little trimming on the upper front part which got hidden by the trim on my unit Can't help you on the amp location, sorry

The amps are under the storage compartment, and the factory hole is double din with maybe 1/4" left over.. There are kits out there to fasciliate installation
