sound proof materials
Any advice on what type of materials can be used to:
1. Replace the 'tar' layer found on the interior floor pan.
2. The insulating fabric about 5/8" think found around the rear wheel well near speakers.
( The old fabric stuff had a nasty condition - when I removed it the dust made me cough and gasp - I'm scared to put it back in my car - it seemed nasty, just from age.)
Also, the tarred areas from the factory are not at 100% coverage. Would it be ok to do 100% coverage? I suppose near the exhaust system you may want to be carefull.

Does anyone know how to get the 'tar' layer off the sheet metel. All i can think to do is to scrape it off but it is not working that well. I am trying to cleen all the interior sheet metel, reprime and put a layer of dynamat down.

For sound proofing ... Dynamat seems to be the best choise to go with
As with the other stuff... I'm not sure if that stuff is actually the fire proof stuff or not, but you should be able to get that anywhere anyways.
As for taking it off, dry ice seems to be the choice, there's a few threads around concerning this. Basically you just spread the dry ice over the flat areas, and just watch it come right off. For the sloped area they have just been chisling away at it, or another method is a wire brush. Make sure to wear safety glasses though.
You should maybe be able to fabricate a piece of wood that would go on the inclines to fill up with dry ice to aid with removal but i don't hink anyone has tried that yet.
Also make sure that when you'd done scraping it you should try to use a high build urethane primer and a single stage paint to cover the primer do not leave it at primer stage thought. then you can put the Mats on and you're good to go.

Airflow is my life
Theres a good thread on the insulation in the 2nd or 3rd gen section. It used to be a stickie. If you cant find it search for "brownbread".
+1 on the dry ice.

Have some interesting points about them vs Dynamat, which is essentially an adhesive panel of tar
Getting this for my RX in the spring-
