Yay! I can contribute already! I feel special!

I don't even have my RX-7 in my possesion yet, but I'm pretty sure that what you're hearing is interfernce from the engine in the speakers. It's normaly due to wires being run badly and too close to the engine. I think you can fix it by using a metal plate as a EM(p?) sheild.

Basicaly what's happening is each time a spark plug fires, the pulse of current creates a magnetic field, when that magnetic field passes over your sound system wires, it then creates a current in those wires it has passed through. That current change is then interperated as a signal, and turned into sound at the speakers. The reason it changes with the RPM is that as RPM increases, the plugs fire in quicker succesion, changing the timing of the magnetic pulses and hence the rate of the signal change going to your speakers.

Sorry for the overly explained answer, but I'm just happy I know the answer to something. Although I'm not sure a metal shield will fix it, I think it's worth a shot if no one countermands what I said with their (probably better) knowledge.

Check your plug wires, if they were say a strictly racing wire then they (most likely) don't have insulation to precent the RF interference. Plus if you have 20yr old plug wires it might be a good time to change em out.

Other then that if you have a more aftermarket system running RCA's your setup might be creating some unwanted noise. If you elaborate on your audio setup that might help.
