Sound deadening...

Alright, I've been searching the forum for the last half hour and can't find what I'm looking for. There was a thread about sound deadening material that could be purchased at Lowe's or Home Depot. What the hell is it called? I'm about to head to Home Depot, and would like to pick some up.

No, it's stuff that's available at Depot. Dynamat is only available at car audio places and is 10x the cost.

It is the roofing underlayment (prevents Icedams). There are two types : one impregnated with asphault (don't use) and the straight rubberized stuff (use this). I can tell you for a fact that it is sticky as hell and smells like roof tar(not sure how long or if ever the smell would go away). I used FatMat in my car, but I have used the formention product on a roof before.

Actually, I'm glad you're around John... You've had subs where the storage bins are, and in the spare tire well, right?

Which sounds better?

The ice dam stuff works quite well for noise and vibration dampening. A really good place to put it is on the inside of the outer door skin. Gives that luxury car sound when you close the doors.

Do stay away from the asphalt/tar based underlayment, the hot tar roof smell may never go away once the odor permeates the fabrics in the car.

$100t2, They where two diffenrt set ups. My 15" plays a hell of allot louder, but it is also runner a larger amp now too. If you want space, then the storage bins rock! If you want volume, then you will need to use the spare tire area.

All those roofing/ice products are asphalt based...

most of the cheaper sound deadeners are asphalt based.

RAAMMat is the stuff to go with if you dont want asphalt based. http://www.raamaudio.com/

The stuff I have is made by Grace. I doesn't have the tar smell and I have used it in a couple of cars. Funny thing is, most of the sound deadeners used are petroleum based.

Not trying to start an arguement here, but, asphalt is petroleum based. I do agree the butyl based ones would be better.

The Grace stuff I have I do believe is a butyl based product. Most asphalitic/petroleum based compunds do not have the rebound elasticity the Grace sheeting does.

oh ok...didnt think about it that way. Not all of them stick, and some of them work better than others. The key thing to look at is thickness. thicker = better

Agreed.

Funny thing. I finished parting out an 86 300ZX last week. Now I remember from years ago that the transition from the 240 to 260 to 280, which was an indication of engine size, didn't really increase performance times of the car. Most of the hp increase was to offset all the extra 'stuff' that was added to the car that added weight. A big part of that was sound deadening. I have an 84 that I have been restoring for a couple of years and bought the 86 for parts.

There is a small hp increase between the 84 and 86, not much. When I got the carpet removed, I was dumbfounded to see 2 layers of deadening material, where the 84 only had one. Both layers in the 86 are thicker than the single deadening in either the 1st or 2nd gen 7's. The deadening is petroleum based. Now I understand why the 300ZX's were such pigs at 3200 lbs.

Compared to both my FB and FC, both of which have lowering springs, adjustable shocks and headers, the ZX is like driving a nice, quiet, soft sponge.

And a slow sponge at that.

Is it specifically a sound deadener? Where'd you get it?
