Someone smart teach me about oil

Car: 85 gsl-se.

I brought my car to a mechanic today, and we identified my problem as having a bad sensor assembly thing (where the oil metering pump connecting rod connects below the air pump). I'll be getting that replaced, because the one right now restricts the rod to being either all the way up, or all the way down. We put the rod into the "up" position, where I have no throttle restriction, as opposed to the "down" position, where it impedes throttle movement.


How sensitive is the sensor? I really want to drive my car, but I don't know if the engine is receiving the proper amount of oil. Pictures will most likely help, so I'll try to post some tomorrow.

Ok then, just tell me this. The connection of the oil metering pump connecting rod where it attaches to the throttle shaft, is pointed up. Does this mean the engine it receiving more, or less oil?

More oil is dispensed by the OMP with the rod in the 'up' position, than the default, 'down' position.

Here's the explanation of everything else; the OMP (Oil Metering Pump) controls how much oil is sent through the clear plastic lines (4 in the SE) that lead to the air intake system on the lower intake manifold (2), and on the top of the engine rotor housings (2). These oil lines carry low pressure oil, which is then squirted into the airpath (on the plenum), and directly onto the apex seals (for the rotor housing outlets). These lubricate the internal engine components that can't be lubricated easily through other means.

When you press the throttle, the OMP rod is pulled UP, which opens an internal valve to allow more oil to pass through the OMP, through the lines, and into the engine. This makes OMP flow dependent on throttle position; the faster the engine turns, the more oil goes in to lubricate it.

Now, to your 'sensor' thing; there aren't any 'sensors' that control OMP flow, i.e., if the rod moves, it's working, usually. If the rod is getting stuck on something else - like the thermo-sensor attached to the back of the waterpump - then rebend the rod so it doesn't hang. It is freely moving when you can lift up on the top of the rod, and release it and it drops back down under spring tension.

With the OMP control rod at it's uppermost position, you're telling the OMP that you want WOT oil flow ALL THE TIME, and you can expect to see increase oil consumption and blue smoke at lower throttle positions. HTH,

Thanks. That was my understanding as well. Now running rich: Is it harmful?

no, but you will have to replace your spark plugs more often if you dont fix it

I'll be fixing it soon. I just want to be able to drive places for the next few days until I can get the part. And I have brand new ngk plugs.
