Some questions from a rotary rookie

Still learning, and haven't even got the Chilton or Haynes book yet, so if I should just wait, please ignore the thread

For Reference, I've got an '84 2+2 GSL-SE

The questions...

1) What does the silver handle under the back seat do?

2) It appears the headlight washer reservoir is cracked, but even when I fill it, I get fluid being pumped back into the main windshield washer fluid reservoir. Has someone pooched the connections, or is this supposed to happen.

3) I have read that the sub-zero system can/should be disabled, but I haven't been able to find the Service Bulletin that describes it. Does anyone know how to track them down?

4) The exhaust system has no obvious holes, but is noisy as hell. Is this just a fact of life for this car?

5) (humour) Where the hell do you put your coffee cup in the morning, or do we have to make do with Adrenaline instead of caffeine?

Thanks in advance for any responses...

Forgot #6, 7, and 0..,.

0) Are there any FAQ's for "common" problems that I should look at before posting any more questions?

6) My speedometer jumps from 0 at a standstill to max at about 7 mph (hard to tell the actual speed <grin>). Any hints?

7) Gas tank value varies between a quarter-full, and total empty. Is this a one-off for me to investigate, or a standing problem.

7) your float could be sticking so that it can't raise past 1/4. you'd have to drop your tank and unscrew it. its on the driver's side.

5) adrenaline, duh

me, I'm trying to find a cupholder drawer for the 7501 dash kit I'm using to plug the huge hole left when removing the factory 2.25 DIN opening for the tape deck, EQ, and radio. The dash kit has 1 DIN for the new stereo, a 3/4 DIN CD holder bin, and a 1/2 DIN plastic cover to fill the gap. Be nice to be able to pull out a cupholder or two from there.

number 3) :

It's located under the windshield wiper fluid and should have a clear label on it. I would clip the wire to the sub zero assit thingy and unhock the hose that goes to your carb, and don't forget to cap it.

Buy a chiltion manual, Haynes sucks!

Don't clip the wire, you don't need to. Just pull the plastic connector off and that'll be fine. The inlet on the carb is in a bit of a tight spot, helps to use some long nose pliers to slip a rubber cap on there. After that, you can remove the plastic container itself by sliding it off the bracket. You can then remove the bracket via the two bolts securing it.

EDIT: I'm stupid, I didn't notice that you had a GSL-SE. Disregard the bit about the carb inlet, I don't know nothin bout SE's

Makes a great place to mount a fuel pressure regulator

BTW, I don't think there's any real reason to remove this, unless you want to eliminate clutter or mount aftermarket parts. Most of these things don't actually work anyways after all these years, and I don't see any harm coming from leaving it there. It certainly is not a first-priority thing to do. I'd focus on your more critical issues first.

Nope, stock exhaust systems should be very quiet. However, after all these years your muffler is probably worn out and your catalytic converters have emptied their contents out the tailpipe long ago haha.

It's a good excuse to do your first power mod anyways - exhaust is always the first step (and biggest bang for the buck) towards performance on a first-gen RX-7.

You can get a cup holder that mounts to the cigarette lighter - I've got one and it works quite well. However, if you can drink coffee while driving your RX-7, your suspension is much too soft

Check out the "search" button at the top right hand side of your screen. Most of the common stuff has been covered many times over. Also, definitely have a look at www.mazspeed.com - another indispensible resource for first generation owners.

Yes, buy a Haynes and a factory manual and you'll need no other.

Hey RotaryNotary,

Where are you at in Ontario? Have a look at the Canadian forum if you're interested in meeting up with some other rotary fanatics; we usually put together some nice gatherings from time to time.

My center console has the joystick/switches assembly missing. It's almost a perfect fit for an RC can. Gonna find a way to line the edges with rubber or something to make it more secure...I gotta have a drink holder. Anyone else got ideas on this?

Since finding the FAQ's, and the search, I have answers to all but

6) My speedometer jumps from 0 at a standstill to max at about 7 mph (hard to tell the actual speed <grin> ). Any hints?

On the sub-zero system, it only kicks in colder than -18 C (0 F), so it will never affect this car...putting it away for the winter....

Thanks for all the help!

p.s. Still want my coffee, so I'll be looking for the lighter socket coffee holder....

and

1) What does the silver handle under the back seat do?
