Solid Core Wires on a carbed '83?
Solid Core Wires on a carbed '83?
I'm looking to replace the wires on my stock 1983 RX-7. A few years back, I had once bought cheap wires from Canadian Tire which actually ended up being *worse* than the ones I was replacing (they were "Niehoff" or something).
Anyway, I'm not looking to spend a bunch of money, and looking around on eBay at prices for cheap universal sets, it seems that at the lower end of the price scale, solid core wires are the same price as the EMI/RFI-suppression ones, which are both cheaper than spiral core wires etc.
I admittedly don't know a heck of a lot about the differences between wires, and I know there are a lot of really knowledgable people here (heck, I was able to rebuild a carb and removed the rat's nest thanks to some of them), so I'm hoping someone might be able to answer a few questions
My questions are:
1) First of all, would solid core wires work on this car? From what I read they'll screw up engine management computers, MSD's, etc, but the car's carbed, has the stock "electronic ignition distributor", and to my knowledge doesn't have any sort of engine management stuff. So from what I *gather*, they'll work, but before I go buying wires, someone please let me know if I'm right/wrong
2) I'm assuming that low-end solid core wires will provide a better spark than low-end suppression wires (i'm comparing Accel Copper Solid Core 8mm wires to the regular Accel Super Stock 8mm suppression wires). Would this be correct?
3) Are solid core wires harder on the ignition system in any way? Does it shorten the life of coils or ignitors or anything?
4) Do solid core wires last shorter/longer/same?
5) The only ill effect of solid core wires that I really read about is related to the radio which doesn't concern me since I don't really listen to the radio. Is there anything else I should be aware of that will be affected though? Also, would a cd deck still work fine, or will noise be transmitted right to the speaker wires or something?
6) In regards to the other drivers around me... I'm assuming that if I'm stopped at a light beside someone listening to the radio, there's the possibility it'll mess up their reception as well. I'm not *too* concerned about this, since I don't drive a lot (thank you gas prices) and most of it's on the highway anyway, but I certainly wouldn't want to be messing up someone else's ECU or anything. Is this something to be concerned about, or are the negative side-effects pretty much limited to my own car?
I did do some searching on the site, but mainly came across "which wire" type threads. If I completely blew it and someone's already detailed all this info, please link the thread
Any help/advince/info would be much appreciated. Thanks.
