So you just bought this header... What are you gonna do with it?

Hey!

I just grabbed this RB header on ebay. It should be on its way to me on monday. It will be going on my gsl-se. The motor is all stock so far. I would like to add, I do not want anymore RB exhaust components. I would like to use just the header. I'm not a fan of doing the same thing everyone else does, I like to have unique stuff.

I am also looking to retain all of the oem functions. such as the air line and hangar locations.

I have a few ideas of what I wanted to do, originally my thought was to run the header/midpipe/glasspack/pipe over the rear end/cheapo ebay can.

Header is pictured below.

Midpipe would be a short pipe that would basically just be there for the air line.

Quick research made me weary of a glasspack, but I would like some sort of presilencer. I have thoughts of opening a glasspack and repacking it with steel wool. Any thoughts?

I'm gonna go with the ebay can basically because I like the price and the look isn't that bad.

And maybe this silencer to go with it.

So let me know your thoughts.. or tell me what you would do if you had the header. Explain your setup and have pricing if possible.

Thanks!

everyone has the same stuff because we know it's reliable...I have a full racing beat exhaust and I have the air pipe installed on my GSL-SE... At minimum, I would run at least a true GSLSE presilencer. They do show up from time to time or a good hi-flow cat like a Bonez....

Even with a presilencer I think the ebay muffler may burn out and get REALLY loud after only a few weeks. I once used a cheap canister muffler on my stock 82 and within 3 weeks I was putting out over 100DB with the silencer the muffler came with. Without it my neighbor could hear me from 2 blocks away... if I did it all again I would spring for the rb muffler and use a magnaflow or something as a presilencer.

Rotaryhaven is right. I am a kinda sorta exception. It really depends on how loud or tinny you wanna sound. And how long you want it to last. And how much you want to spend. I was on a budget, read a lot (dozens) of threads.
On my 12a I have an old school RB road race header with the NLA collector/presilencer. Behind that I have a Magnapack http://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B0018J...dir_mdp_mobile
And for a muffler I have this Borla, on which my Mazda stock tips fit just right.
http://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B0018J...dir_mdp_mobile

The sound is nice and low. And there are no baffles anywhere. The stock muffler with the header/silencer was tinny/metallic and I think louder. Certainly more annoying.

I think it's important to have the RB silencer first as it absorbs a lot of the heat that quickly kills ordinary exhaust components. Back in the day Rotary Engineering's exhaust consisted of two presilencers with a glass packed turbo muffler at the end. The presilencers absorbed enough heat that the glass didn't burn out. I had one and it worked beautifully.

I have kinda tried to replicate that exhaust, and think I've come pretty close, for a cook.

I saw a vid on youtube of this RB header with a magnaflow muffler into a small cheapo can. Sounded great. Could end up being my route.

I have no problem modifying anything I get, I can replace packing anytime. I'd most likely repack with various densities of steel wool, or something that can handle the rotary heat.

Edit: Dynapack...

Instead of getting the RB presilencer, there has to be a good DIY alternative.

I mean what the hell is so special about it? Is it filled with kryptonite or some kind of plutonium?

I was thinking of gutting a glasspack, filling it with something that would absorb the heat well, and adding the air tube to the middle of it. That would retain the oem function of cooling the exhaust in the presilencer.

rb presilencer to rb universal muffler. all other brands will burn off

OR

straight pipe to a rb primaflow muffler.

combination of rb presilencer and primaflow muffler will be too restrictive tho it will be quiet.

on ther other hand, since you have a stock motor, real gain HP is barely noticeable

That's an FC header. It might not fit a 1st gen properly. It may need some simple cuts and welds at various angles. The good part is it has a 2.5" collector and flange.

I know it is an fc header. But it was blatantly advertised as 84-92.

You may be %100 correct though.

What makes this header able to fit 84-92?
https://atkinsrotary.com/store/84-92...der-16127.html

It looks like I am receiving this header, it states 86-92 here:

https://atkinsrotary.com/store/86-92...der-16130.html

And ideally, this is what I should of gotten:

https://atkinsrotary.com/store/84-85...der-16013.html

So now that this bombshell has been dropped, what do I need to do to make this work? What are the differences in the last two headers?

85-92 RX7 is an FC RX7.

It'll fit fine if you are gonna replace all of your exhaust with aftermarket components.

I use a Cherrybomb and a Flowmaster. I pack the hell out of the flowmaster every other month with glass woven into chicken wire. Its not EXTREMLY loud.... but its louder than I'd like. Just don't have the cash to make what I want.

The cherrybomb was probaly blown out when I got it off a junked truck I found.

Fc was in production at 85. But not 84. First sold in 86.

84-92 should mean all 13b fuel injected motors.

Have you tried anything besides glass packing? Ive heard the glass will burn off at around 300 degrees. I've also heard a standard rotary motor will put out exhaust temps around 600 degrees. I have no idea if this is accurate info or not, but its all that I have heard so far.

the special part about it is that it bolts to that header, its packed with SS already, and there are a couple small construction details that make it a little more durable than average (thick wall tube, and the perforated section is slip fit at the front, so it can expand/contract)

so its not made of kryptonite, but it fits and it works, which is probably more important than price.

there is absolutely nothing wrong with rolling your own, most people want a quick bolt in part, and go work on something else

Stay far away from glasspacks and cheapo mufflers. They might sound good at first, but in a short time they'll burn out and be louder than if you had just run a straight pipe. If you can fab up your own exhaust, use the RB universal muffler and presilencer or build your own out of similar materials if you have more time than money.
