Sunroof=GS

Well some S's could have it as an option if the car was ordered that way, but I assume its a GS like my 85 was

Yea, most likely a GS. From what I've heard they didn't make too many S's.

I though all the GS models had rear disk brakes. And Mazda didn't start making the GS till 82 or 84

GSL's have rear disc brakes. GS's are drum.

The GS has been around since the RX-7 debuted. The GSL is the one that appeared in 81.

One source has the GS with a sunroof, another source says it was optional at a cost of $325.

In the end to check whether its a S or GS its a question of small details, for example the latter had a central armrest with a storage compartment and a glove box light.

No model had power locks.

I tend to think that is correct, my GS has no sunroof.

A GS can be had with no sunroof, I had one, thats why everyone ragged me so bad when I cut the roof off and put a factory one in

Turns out that a GS w/o sunroof is a rare car OH well I like the sun on my face, and I think a sports car should have some sortta roof assy.

My 80 GS has no sunroof. The easier way to tell if the car is an S or GS would be the 4 spoke steering wheel, electric hatch popper, and body side moldings. While someone could have added these items, if it has all 3 then it is probably a GS.

Then again, who knows with '83's. The official bastard childs of the 1st generation!

My GS did not have a sunroof, but had one added on later. I saw a Red GS just the other day with the factory sunroof so I'm sure the sunroof I have is aftermarket.

Most S-models had 4-spoke steering wheels added at the dealership. The 2-spoke steering wheels are supposed to be fairly rare.

BUT... for SA's, if it has a rear swaybar it's a GS, if not it's an S (or a wuss used to own it and pulled the bar off).

Then my newly acquired '84 is a GS, after all...it has the center armrest and glovebox light and the rear sway bar, but no sunroof...you can learn something every single day on this Forum, I swear...

Note that ALL cars '81-up have rear swaybars... Wimpy little 15mm bars, too, not the beefy 18mm bars that '79-80 had. (One of the reasons why I spent so long hunting down an '80 GS)

I'd like to have one...

Heck even an S with no sunroof would be cool. Same difference, really.

My question is whether having no sunroof is rare.

All but one 1st-gen I've seen had a sunroof.

Likewise, I've only ever seen two FC's without sunroofs... one an '87 base and one was a GTUs
