Question Smoky startups

About a year after I picked up my '85 GSLSE it began to blow a fair amount of smoke from a cold startup. It dissappears within 5-10 seconds, but it makes a pretty ugly cloud. I tried Bardahl "No smoke" at my last oil change and it helped for about a month, but it's just as bad now as it was before.

Anyone know what causes this and how to fix it ?

A set of oil o-rings and maybe the seals too.

Yeah, what seldawg said. Also, what does it smell like? Oil? Fuel? Antifreeze?

Assuming that it smells/looks like oil, do a search for "Lucas oil stabilizer". Some have had good results with this (including me). However, this would be a short term patch to get you by until you can rebuild/replace your motor (probably).

I had a lot of smoke when the choke was on in my 83 GSL, changed to Synthetic and got rid of the smoke after about 1500 miles, I assume it cleaned out the carbon deposits.

The smoke I'm getting is white and smells like oil. Only happens when the motor is cold and has sat for a day or more.

Try some Lucas, your oil rings are slowly on thier way out. If the engine has good compression and runs well, put up with it, otherwise a rebuild is the only way to eliminate the problem.

You don't state the mileage on the engine, since you have fuel injection, it could possibly be leaking injectors also. Have you ever had them rebuilt?

I agree. Get some Lucas heavy duty oil stabilizer and use 1 or 2 quarts in place of regular motor oil. Also, pick up some Seafoam and run that through the tank to clean the injectors (just in case).

Seafoam is a great idea^^^ as a simple means to clean the fuel/intake system. Ran it through my carb and it smoothed out the idle immediately.
