Question The smoking pad!

I know it sounds like a BAD cop melodrama, but I have a big problem.Ya know how on the calipers(1982)they have those retaining clips for the pads, well mine doesnt have those. For a while the brakes were just chattering around when not applied. But I let my old man drive it for a week and the left front is draging, smoking and the caliper is brand new,so A:where might I find those retaining clips?B:Is there an aftermarket substitute or hillbilly engineering I can use, cause I kinda need all four brakes to work, especially on the S curves out here!

Never used them, brake pad goo works for me. Mazda carries them or you can get them from MazdaTrix.

well, the slapping of the pads is annoying, but all of a sudden that side just froze up. and was smokin like a mother.smoke and hot things around fuel scare me,it's an irrational fear,i know.

So, you're saying that the caliper itself is not releasing the pads from the rotor?

What you're describing with ONE brake dragging is what happens when the pad gets worn down sufficiently to drop into the gap between the caliper hanger and the brake rotor.

STOP DRIVING THE CAR. You are doing damage to the rotor every foot that you move it until you remove the wheel and do a proper brake job on the car. If you're lucky, you may still be able to use the rotor if it's not scored too badly, but as soon as you get the wheel off, you'll be able to see what's causing this problem.

New brake pads shouldn't need the 'anti-rattle shim set' installed if you choose to use the blue Permatex stuff, instead. The idea behind shims and glue is so that the pads will retract with the brake caliper when you remove braking force - this keeps the pads from riding against the rotor increasing heat, noise, and decreasing brake pad life. I have stopped using all of my springs and shims in leiu of Permatex high temperature glue on the backs of the pads when they're installed. When you put it on, it's blue, but when you heat them up during the brake pad break-in period, the glue turns black and freezes the pads solid to the caliper.

The important thing is to be sure that you fix the car and verify that no damage has been done. A rotor on one side with heavy scoring caused by a metal backing plate being scraped against it is going to eat up any future pads that you try to install. Check to see if you need to have your rotors resurfaced. HTH,

well, long duck we did stop driving it because of an oil cooler leak, after we fixed that and test drove it is when the brake problem started,Here's the thing.new rotors and pads in the front, also replaced left caliper. The pad is dragging bad enough it's a noticable performance decrease. No pulling, just a real bad drag.I want to pull it apart but they are burning down a house next door and I dont want to inhale all that crap so Im going fishing.but If anyone knows of problems with calipers from advance auto then let me know.p.s.I only have 200 new miles on the car since replacing the braking system.
