smog test failure :(

I realize that this is a much talked about topic but I am sooo close now to passing

I went to a test only with my 85 rx7 and was labeled a gross poluter

Had the cat's replaced today and it droped my emissions by half, no longer a gross poluter...but still failed the test

Dont have any after market or differences to the engine...is there any way I can make it pass? I heard something about bypassing some tubes from the carb to help it out...any ideas?

BTW i am very new to the mazda rotary realm so please explain thoroughly if you have any suggestions

Help will be much appreciated

RX-7 Newb,
Jason

You should post your results of the test so others can evaulate it and point you in the right direction.

Hey, I just went through this last month... where are you failing, or are you failing all of it? I'd check the acv, and if it is a carbed car, and i'd find a place to fine tune the carb if you are failing at idle. also what kinda cat did you get? at last, you need to have the car piping hot to pass (ie drive it for a while right before the test...

are you running the air pump, because i think you need to have fresh air in the cat. I still say check the acv, and where did you get the new cats?, ie what brand are they?

Just checking to make sure that your plugs are fresh, the wires are in good shape,
also the cap and rotor. Also the air filter too. Make sure you have no vacuum leaks anywhere. Also can run some alcohol in the system. Make sure that you time the test so that your engine and cat are still hot. That means take it on the freeway and run it for 20 minutes before you go in and dont shut the engine off. I have never had a carbed 1st gen fail after it was tuned and had a new main cat on it.
Good luck, rx7doctor

i just passed with my gsl-se... but nevertheless, i put in two 12 oz. bottles of dry gas (any auto parts store will have it) i don't have a ratio for you, but the car WILL run rough once it starts burning that alcohol, don't punch it at all while that stuff is being burnt, and re-fill entire tank once you are done with the test (if u do the dry gas trick)
