Smog Legal Power Increases?
Unfortunately I will be moving into an area where my emissions will be checked, and was wondering what options are available to increase power in the meantime without screwing myself when I move.
Basically who here passes smog.... and what have you done?
I am extremely interested with any blow-through turbo's that pass smog, and any after-market carb setups that pass smog. (even if the smog passing involves a day or two of prep work swapping parts)
I am aware that there are some turbo II conversions that pass smog just fine, but my pocketbook isn't ready for anything EFI.

I have to pass smog. I've got a Bonez high-flow cat/presilencer with a Racing Beat powerpulse muffler. I've also got a custom intake that's similar to the Bonez intake and the secondaries on my stock carb are mechanically operated. Everything else is stock. I'm probably getting a few more HP out of the engine with the exhaust, but that doesn't concern me much.
Converting your secondaries from vacuum actuated to mechanical is definitely the best "bang for the buck" mod. All you need is a piece of wire. Check out the 1st gen archive for a "How-to" on this.
Hope this helped ya out

Actually I currently live in Colorado, in an area where I do not have to pass emmissions. I am moving to Las Vegas Nevada, where emmissions are required.
Currently I have removed the rats nest and air pump, and replaced my cat with a bonez racing pipe.
I am mostly interested in finding out if it's possible to pass smog with a 45 weber on a 12a. If anyone has done so, and how they did it (MSD6a, dual cats, mixing alcholhol with the gas, etc.)

You're probably going to have to re-build your rat's nest and get a cat if you want to pass. Every time this topic comes up, I feel so blessed for living in Saskatchewan. No testing for smog here.

Do you mind my asking where in CO is there no e testing. I didn't know this.
So essentially no way to run an aftermarket carb.
Ok I can deal with that. I'm just going to have to get really good at swapping parts on the weekends......
By the way.... it doesn't sound like many of us first gen owners pass smog.
P.S. Anyone run, or heard or a blow through turbo setup using a nikki that passes smog? I understand that they are typically modified before going blow-through, but have yet to see one myself. Any info or links appreciated.

Absolute Power is Awesome
I never had a problem passing smog with the stock set up in Denver with the Denver dyno smog testing. The engine had 180,000 miles on it, it burned antifreeze like crazy but still passed the short test (meaning it was very clean)

I have no trouble with the stock setup on the 83GS or 85GSL, in the Bay Area where smog is tough. I'm changing the 85 to Bonerz cat and monza muffler, to try to eak out a few HP. If that passes, I'll try an exhaust header. I figure to get a 'trial' smog test before it comes due: cheap $30 for a pre-test.

I just hope that they dont bring emissions back to minnesota, already got talked bya cop becasue of the smell
The key is not to let them tailgate you long or sit behind you at a traffic light where they can unwittedly breath in your exhuast. I hate the twin cities traffic congested areas for the chance of someone staying behind you for long periods espeically if it the cops.
