GA Sloppy feeling shifter help please!

I have a real sloppy feeling shifter... It feels like there is not a spring or anything in it. Just real llose... It also takes a little finess to get it into second without scrubbing...

Any Ideas? I know my race shifters in the VW world where loaded to one side and gave a great solid feel... Or is the nature of the rx7?

Pull it out and check if you still have the shifter bushings and the shifter spring is not broken. Unscrew ****, and I believe 3 10mm bolts.

I've never tried aluminum. Nylon feels ok to me. If you want to try aluminum, let us know how it turns out.

Does the tranny need more oil than what's currently in it? The nice thing about 79-80 is that you can add oil through the shifter hole. Just make sure to remove the fill plug so excess can pour out so you don't over fill.

80w90 gear oil seems to work. Some people mix in some ATF. Others like synchromesh.

Oh so it fills up the tranny fluid or the shifter?

I couldn't find anything in the fsm's or nothing, some say shifters need fluid soemtimes and some say nah.

We looked at a fc my friends building and it has a fill area.

Yeah i saw that vid too...but i duno...i have never filled my lil tranny shift box...I only grease the shaft or whatever...an thats when i feel like going the extra step...lol...fill it don't fill it it will be fine...others here who are **** about that will tell he/she to fill it...Wouldn't hurt tho to fill it since you are changing the bushings and such...And to tell you the truth its only three bolts holding down the shifter assembly plate...once those come off the shifter pops off and ta-da your there...so i guess he/she minus well fill it up...hahahah...

On my '81 I added a couple ounces until the bottom of the shifter (the small ball) would get wet with fluid. I think the shift housing would be about half way full at that point. Then I noticed a slow leak from the shift housing all over my heat shield. Never caused smoke, at least. Steve84TII packed his shift housing full of grease; probably a good idea for me as I bet my housing is empty by now.

The fill plug is near the starter. If you're under there and can see the starter, the plug has a square head and I think a 5/8" wrench (box end) fits quite well. Remove it before the drain plug because if the fill plug won't budge, you shouldn't drain the fluid lol. You've got bigger problems to worry about besides the age of the fluid.
