Sigh...something wrong with the fuel system. :(
2 days ago: i was pullin out of o'reilly when all the sudden, my car bogged down real bad. i had just shifted into second and was bout 1/2 throttle, when the rpm's started droppin. so i let off the gas and pushed it back in, only to have the rpm's drop to zero and the car die. so i coasted into walgreens parking lot with the help of some friends and waited for dad. we took the car apart and discovered it was not gettin fuel at all.(the car kept turning over, but wouldnt catch.) well, at first he thought it was the pump because it wouldnt turn on when we turned the key to the on position. so, we tried the new fuel pump and that worked. my dad was curious though and tried the "busted" fuel pump. well, IT TURNED RIGHT ON! so dad was getting pissed and confused at the same time. next we checked the fuel filter, which was clogged as hell and my dads friend blew through it to empty it out. he also blew through the two lines connected to the carb. so, with all this stuff, dad was still curious, put it back together and told me to start it. as it was turning over, it coughed. he told me to try the choke, and then it started right up.
yesterday: well, we replaced the fuel filter with a brand new one, and she ran fine all day, before and after i changed that. im leaving my g.f's house last night, and not even 50 feet from her house, it pulls the same crap. dad is now pretty sure the fuel pump is bad, but wanted me to get second opinions.\
edit: by the way, it ran fine when it was running. it just had these two instances out of the blue.

after trying the old fuel pump, did you leave it in? could've finally crapped out on you.... my other thought is that the wiring for the pump is bad/corroded/loose. check the fuel filter again.

edwin: the thing is, the wiring worked on both fuel pumps. why would it give out at certain times?
cdrad: the tach works fine.
dad told me to put a new pump on there and see what happens. so well see. i also got some pics of my car before it died...lol. ill be postin them later.

I agree with txredneckmedic-
sounds like the same problem I had with my RX7, especially if the fuel tank was below about 1/3 full. Ran great on a full tank, but died when the level dropped. Fuel tank has to come out. POR15.com sells a great fuel sealer kit, basically you need to
-drain the tank. It needs to be as empty as possible to remove- early (79-80 RX7) had no drain, but later ones do I believe
-disconnect and remove the sender unit, located inside the rear driver wheel well. You shgould order a new gasket for this before you start so its ready to go back in...
-tank is basically held in place by 2 straps but you will need 2 people to get it in and out
-the POR15 kit includes a cleaning agent you get the old crap out with and it preps the inside for the Sealer, which prevent further tank innards from shedding into your fuel
-and of course you will need another fuel filter
good luck

7 yall has it nailed. I had the exact same problem. one person can do the tank removal and install, if you can work the jack with your foot, looks funnyy bit it can be done. I always have an extra cheap plastic filter along for the ride.

Filter clogging bad... As stated earlyer the tank has some sediment.. It will happen after 20+ years... A reseal isn't needed in all cases... sometimes a good drain and rinse will do the job.
