shreading belts, wtf ??

ok so my car has gone through 3 belts now.
when it revs over 3.5k or so i hear a high pitch squeal.
i replaced the alt and that didnt help.
could this be a water pump problem, like the bearing is bad or something?
only thing the belt is turning is the alt and water pump, everything else has been removed.

if its eating belts, then check your pulleys.

It is very possible. Take the belt off and turn the water pump pulley by hand.

I had the same problem. Sometimes I'd go thru 2-3 belts a day. Finally stopped buying the Autozone belts and bought a Goodyear belt. Problem gone.

You will be suprised that a little sharp edge on the alternator pulley can ruin your day.

That and check that the bearings aren't siezing. The squealing indicates the belt is slipping. If a bearing is bad, or the nut on the alt pulley is not tight, belts are gone quickly.

you think it is slipping becuse of too much power?
its a street ported 13b motor.
do i need a dual pulley?

its not the alt because i have already tried a couple.

Too much power, lol, no it's rpm related if anything. Dual alt pulley or yoohoo belt should solve it if the bearings in the alt and wp are good.

I bent the adjustment part on the alt. and the pulleys wasnt lined up just right i went through 4 in 1 day. Most was extra 1's from other motors.

I did this once when i installed the alt incorrectly. It was misaligned because there is a way of setting the alt too far back if you look closely at the bracket. Thats the only other thing i could think of. Other than that, check your pulleys for sharp edges, and check for tight bearings.

I checked and changed pulleys - did all that. Still had problems. There's not enough belt contact on the water pump pulley. The yahoo belt will work for a little while.

I had a automechanics teacher tell me once - always check the easy things first.

That usaully caused by the belt riding too high on the pulley. From a belt that is too wide.

The belt is probally fine. My pump was a 2nd gen and it was too large for my engine. Then the belt would rub against the fan. Eventually I replaced it and its just fine now. You could probally avoid it by getting a Electric fan. Clearance is much better. Thats what I have now with the right pump.

A streetported 13b? I thought you were a big enviromentalist?

Spin your pulleys and make sure they spin freely. Then check the alignment of the pulleys. Make sure you aren't over tightning them as well. Hp has nothing to do with the problem you are having.

bearing binding

wobbling pulleys

alignment

all of these can cause belts to break in short order.
