My understanding is that once Mazda begain to run out of black morrors as 1st gen production neared the end, they began using painted mirrors. Don't know if that is truth or fuction, but it sounds like a good story to tell. Anyhow, that's what the guy who sold me my first SE told me.

Yep, my car has them, too - both sides.
After looking at the front suspension, I think that it seems to be the weak point if you ever bump anything with your lower valance. There isn't much keeping your front bumper from being pushed back, so when you nose up to a parking block or curb, it lets the fenders flex out to the sides as the lower edge comes back. This causes the creases that you see in the picture, above.
To rectify the crease, I just push in right where the crimp occurs and this seems to straighten it out a bit. Not a long term fix, though.
