Should I be scared of my sunroof?

The first time I looked at an RX7 (first gen), the guy that owned it told me that whenever a first gen with a sunroof sits for a little while. The seal sticks and then when you open it back up. There goes the seal and it'll leak.

Well since then I've bought a first gen. While I've been working on other parts of the car, his sunroof comment is still floating around in the back of my head so I haven't played with the sunroof.

Is this misinformation? (On a side note he told me a lot of stuff that I later learned was kind of questionable)

Thanks.

i would say the seal will still be ok. i have never seen one leak unless there was some sort of rust issues. the doors and hatch both do that when you leave them for a while so i wouldnt worry about it.

When I got my car (it had been sitting for more than five years), all the seals leaked except the sunroof.

It's good for them to be operated once in a while (lets it maintain elasticity) and a little food-grade (no petroleum) silicone is good for them, too, but the sunroof is probably the least likely to just leak; it's got a nice drained relief channel all the way around it, and a good overhang.

Hit it with the garden hose or a carwash sprayer; if it doesn't leak then, it won't while it's parked or driving.

The drain hoses are more likely to plug or leak than the sunroof seal, IMO.

Mine sat for 5 years under a tarp. I didn't hesitate to open the sunroof the first day I un-tarped it. It should be good.

As DivinDriver said, check the drain holes around the sunroof and when you open the first time be slow for good measure, but it should be alright. Worst case I think blackdragonauto.com carries replacement seals.

Awesome, I'll give it a go. Now I just need to figure out how to use it. (I'm from the generation of electric sunroofs.)

Twist.

Turn **** to raise, then you can unclip the back and slide it off. There is a small red safety catch and two red push buttons to unlatch it.

don't over twist it. I did this and had to jb weld the inside back together. It works great, and you can't tell It was broken unless you take it apart.
