Exclamation 84 GSL-SE boggs down at high RPMs!!! HELP!

hey every one. Well my brothers 84 GSL-SE has the most anoying problem. After it runs for a bit and you try to get on it and speed up and run teh RPMs high she sputters and looses power, hesitates. After pulling over turnong off the engien and waiting like 5min start her back up and she runs ok for for a bit then does it again at high RPMs
Has anyone else seen this? Or been through this with their own car? I mean its jsut soooo frustrating to have to deal with this, i would love it if i knew what was wrong with it, and how to go about fixing it.

Please, please, any help, information you can give me to solve this issue would be greatly apretiated.

Thanks again!

does it sputter or backfire at high rpm's? or just bog down, if it sputters and missfires then the sparkplugs may be fouled

well no back fires that he has told me, but it bogs down and looses power...it doesn't seem like a miss fire, but i dunno. As for teh plugs being foweld i am about 80% sure they are in good shape, i haven't looked at them fo rmyself yet, i'll tell him to do so, but i'd hoped that he would have checked them already.

check the cats. sounds like how my -SE performed until I replaced the old gummed up cats with a new, high flow unit.

Fuel filter is easier and cheaper to change, and should be done every couple of months anyway Go for that first.

I agree with the others,,,go with the little stuff first (ie: tune up, plugs, check the wires too)...then definitely change the fuel filter......what kinda gas you use,,,,should use regular gas...check the air filter too...is it clean...dirty....I don;t think it is anything major...just going to be a pain to find out what exactly it is...good luck.....cjf

Hiya, Buckaroo...

Trailhands are right...Change fuel filter. Upon further thinkin', dependin' on the mileage, it may well be time for a new fuel pump. I used to have the same issue with my little hoss and I had a new filter. My pump was still workin', but couldn't keep up with high R's and mashed pedal under load. New fuel pump, no more issue...

P.S. When's the last time you fellas cleaned the throttle body? Uh-huh, thought so....Get a spray can of throttle body cleaner, and use it....I don't think electrics are your problem. Sounds more like fuel delivery to me....

6 bolts will have all three converters in your hands. Then take them apart individually. I had a situation where the front two converters fell apart and the pieces lodged themselves in the main converter. You may have a chunk rolling around in there blocking exhaust flow.
Go here after changing the fuel filter.

Best of luck!
