Short Throw Shifter?

So i did a search, but did not really come up with what i was looking for. First off, Is a miata shifter really a short throw shifter? or just a short shifter? also, if it is a short throw shifter, what year of one do i want to get? Or do you all just recomend me getting one of mazdatrix? its for my '83 tranny.

why dont you just remove your shifter and cut it - i cut mine to 3 1/2 inches
and had it rethreaded - probably about the same cost

I highly recommend getting the one from mazdatrix. I sat in a 1st gen that had one and it was an extremely short shifting set up. It was almost impossible to miss 3rd, or any gear for that matter. I will be purchasing one very soon when I get my car up and running. They said 8-10 make a buzzing noise but I will get used to that or just turn the radio up. I guess it's your call.

Well the site says some of them might, some don't. I guess it is a gamble to take when you purchase one. I will be purchasing one soon.

S2-S5 shifters are the same. The only difference is the S5s have a different thread pattern for the ****. The Miata shifter will work, as will the Mazdatrix, Mr C's, and Jorx ones.

Cutting off the top of the shifter makes it a short shifter, not a short throw one, big difference. I make my own short throw shifters that are 7/8" longer than the stock ones, yet has a shorter throw than any other one on the market.

Cutting off and making it shorter does not make it a short throw shifter. You have not changed the fulcrum and have just ruined a perfectly good shifter.

Now you will say but my shifts fell shorter and everything. True but a good short throw with a wieghed **** is about 2439857042578120435204356235times better, because it relocated the fulcrum, and most of the time keeps the stock hieght, maybe an 1in or so shorter.

I tell you what though, Mazdatrix's short throw is pretty amazing. I have felt short throws, not in 7's but other cars and they don't stand a chance to this one. It feels awesome, it is nearly impossible to miss gear.

I would say wait for Aaron Cake, because he is working with B&M but I hant heard anything in a while. So who knows. That and I am not sure if it would bolt up to a first gen.

I can tell you right now that the Miata shifter will not work. I know this because I purchased one off of eBay and attemped to install it. The reason it won't work is because the "pivot screw" when the three mounting holes are lined up is not in the center but off to the left, I'd say about the 10 o'clock position. Now, that's as far as I got, because I did not want to stick everything in, especially the lower main pivot ball bushing into the tranny and not get it out (was a tight fit just getting it snug) and worry about not being able to get it out.

Stick with an actual short shifter made for the Rex, like from Mazdatrix. Altho, they claim like 2 out of 3 installs, or whatever, don't make a rattle noise.
