I think the difference in in "feel" only. Seriously, a shifter is a shifter...... what makes a good one vs a bad one, one that is notchy, hard to shift accurately is typically labeled as bad. Shifters that have too much play in them aren't good either. Short throw is supposed to help shift faster, but I doubt it does much in this regard because the main contributer to shift time is still intact (namely you, the driver). But if you like the feel, either short shifter may be right for you.

They shorten the upper part of the shifter to keep it the sam height over all. All they are doing is moving the large ball farther up the shifter. They use a spacer to accomplish this.

Every time this argument comes up the lecture I had in my high school Physics class on vectors pops back into my head. Am I the only who payed attention in that damn class? Somebody please explain HOW there can be a differance between the two "type" of short shiffters.
Read up on "fulcrums and levers". There is a difference in how it acheives it's goal. BTW - if you want to make a shortened shifter, the best way that I've found is to clamp a vice grip on the top of a stock shifter and twist it off. It leaves the rubber underneath so that you can mount a shift **** directly to the steel shaft under it. This reduces vibration on your hand. If you drop a little sythetic gear oil on the lower ball, it shifts smoother also. Not so notchey.
