Short shifter... ??? How do they do it?

I mean... You COULD cut the shfiter lever/rod down.... but WHY? you loose leverage.. harder to shift....

So I was thinking how they make them... so I thought, did they move the extend the rod below the pivot point cause longer stroke?

Or did they move the piviot point up?? Or what??

Please help me with this... i am super curious..

Peace

They move the pivot point up. You mount it using a spacer on top of the stock mounting point. The rod is shorter too, so it looks basically the same but the throw is shorter.

This is the www.horsepowerinabox.com version

There are kits around that you can use. or you could just chop a bit off the top of the shift.

Your best bet is getting a kit.

I did'nt weld ****! I simply chopped off what I did'nt want, put it in a vice, and threaded it.
I had a lathe, and made an aluminum shft **** with a hole in the bottom. I put really coarse threads on the end of the lever. (That lathe did'nt thread, and I only had one huge die to thread with.)
The **** basically just threaded itself on there because aluminum is so soft.

To do it better, you would buy the **** you want (or stock) and properly thread the lever for it to fit. You might first angle the tip of the lever, if you like. (The threads would get messed up if you did it later.)

This makes for a very hearty, "notchy", purposeful shift that takes more effort. If you get pumped while driving and tend to be hard on the lever, you'll like the feel of this mod.
If you want a shifter that seems to slip into gear effortlessly and smoothly, buy the other.

You might do a search. You will probably find about three or four other ways it's been done.

I drove a modded '85 GS with this mod. It had the Mazdatrix one in it.

I didn't like it. Literally 2 inches between throws. EXTREMELY notchy. Felt like a nintendo joystick.

I would hate to drag race with it, I'd probably get 1/3/5 confused, as well as the 2/4 gears.

my friend has a low 14 sec crx and his throw is less that 1.5". he cut and welded it himself in 3 different places i believe. i wasnt to sure about it hte first time i drove it, because its so much power, and its really easy to miss second and third. but with a little practice i got used to it, and ended up liking it. i dont want it that short in my car, but i think 2-2.5 would be nice. definatly dont want to pay the money for a professionally made one though.. ill probably get one from a junk yard to mess around with so incase i **** it up, im not out of luck

I cut and welded mine about a year ago. I think I took about an inch off. I wasnt to impressed. I thought it looked kind of cool but now it feels notchy and not much improvement in throw. For my next one I will buy one that has been profesionaly made with the piviot piont raised.

Sre you just looking for someone to cut and weld your shifter shorter? Or are your looking to have someone change the piviot point? I can cut and weld them. Mine has held up just fine but like I said I wasnt to impressed. The only was to do it change the piviot piont in my opion. I have an extra shifter in my garage maybe I will give this a shot what could it hurt? If you raise the piviot a 1/4 inch then you would just need to fabricate a spacer that is a 1/4 larger I would asume.

my friend just got a B&M short shifter installed in his ZX2 yesterday, its 1" between 1st and 2nd, its totally nuts. I don't know how you could shift something like that. I like my 83's shifter the way it is.

I dont know guys, I like to have the shifter as close to my hand on the steering wheel as possible for my kind of country backroad (racing) driving style. I have about 12-15 hairpin turns on my way to and from work and you all know I take advantage of the rear drive slide manuvers. This is just my opinion on the subject, and Im a post ***** (lol).

peace
