Neither site has the '79 model. Can you use another model year (and which) for the '79?

Call Mazdatrix and talk to Henry, he is a nice guy and very knowledgable.

That is where I bought mine, they even have a video online on how to install it.

Took me about 10 mins. <~~~~mechanically challenged

79-80 have a different type of shifter.. they donot have the remote gear box that the rest of the trannys have...
there are no short through shifters on the market for the sa trans.

you would have to get it custom made (or do it yourself). i once talked with someone at selectmaz who said that he could make one. that was a while back though.

I made a short shifter for my 79 and it works great... here is the post about it:

How to Make it

Stock, cut down shifter is on the right, the short shifter is on the left... The Throw is nice and short... click-click

But here is the cool part... I'm gonna be putting in a gsl-se tranny tommorow into my SA so my short shifter is no good to me... so i might just sell it.

Matt- nice job on the short shifter. I have the Selectmaz shifter for my 79 xsmn but I have not installed it because I own a 72 RX2 and I do sit close enough to use it with out some engineering so it sits. Gordon

That is still expensive for a short shifter! I would pay $50 the most for a short shifter...and I would still be hesitant.

You won't find one then. The cheapest that I've found a used C's is $100. I bought it.

What makes the shifter re-turn to middle? When i push my shifter to the the left as if im going to shift into first, and let it go, it just stays there, when pushing to the right and i let go, ir re-turns to the middle. Any ideas?

about the centering problem, I believe it is spring loaded detents on the internal shift linkage, which you dont replace with just a shifter, so the problem wont be solved with a shortshifter kit.

I will be making myself a shortshift kit probably in the next couple of weeks, will raise the pivot point only around 10mm 3/8" or so, but it should improve the shift alot.

but my S1 needs the gearbox internal linkages checked/adjusted/modded so I might see if I can make gains internally too.

the mazdatrix shortshifters make alot of vibration noise due to the one piece solid design, the C's short shifters are the best!!! it utilizes the oe. design, 2 piece with a rubber dampener in the middle.
