Tecnically the flaming carburetor should not be possible on a rotary, unless the rotors are caked up in carbon deposits or the trailing is seriously off.
I actually doubt that you can offset the trailing that much.

I've actually seen flames shoot out of a Nikki before. It was an '81-'82 engine with unknown miles, but looked to be on the high side. We checked the timing and it appeared to be correct.
We pulled the engine but it has not been torn down yet so the cause is still unknown.

The side seals are shot. if the springs dont push out the pressure just sneeks around the side. My guess is it may have gotten some water in there by sitting or bad gas or coolant and it rusted the spring or seal.
Crome could be gone as well and the apex isnt sealing good enough.
