why would you want to do that? You'll lose power for sure. I don't think it'll ruin anything unless you do it a bunch of times and not going fast enough for 5th gear.

the reason i want to do that is the speed limit on the road i drive on alot is 40 and i get to that speed in 3rd at about 4k and i dont like to hold it that long (untill the next light) so i switch to 4th with drops it to about 3k then to 5th so i can save gas and engine wear.but a couple of times i have switched from 3rd to 5th so i can just leave 4th out completly to save wear on my clutch but i was told that might not be good for it so thats why im asking

According to Road & Track, this is OK to do. Someone asked this question of them in their Technical Correspondence section. You can skip any number of gears at any time.

I've been doing it for a very long time (decades) without any problems with any of my transmissions. I also go straight from 4th into 2nd most of the time when downshifting. Downshifting through every gear comes from the days when brakes were crap and you needed the engine to help slow down the car. No point to it anymore.
