Exclamation Shifter linkage or what?

I am still working on getting the clutch replaced. I have a list of things I removed from my 1985 12a rx7 to get at the transmission:

Batteries connection, clutch slave, Starter, exhaust heat shield to get at some bolts

But what seems I cant find if or how to remove the shifter linkage. Plus is there an thing else I need to look out for to remove to drop the Transmission. I am also removing the drive shaft.

just remove the shifter the "linkage" is inside unlike older cars that utilized an external setup

unless your car is an automatic, there is no linkage. loosen the trim around the shifter inside the car, remove the shifter boots and shifter, and it drops right out, nothing more to it other than the tranny mounts and such

Also remove the drive shaft and plug the end so fluid does not come out.

There are three 10mm bolts that hold the shifter on. These are accessed inside the car under the shifter boot. Remove them, and remember where they came from because there are different lengths. The shifter will pull out with a little force, because there is a spring in there that keeps the lever centered. Getting that back together correctly is not really intuitive either.

KC Repu said drop the drive shaft and plug up the tail with something that will keep the fluid in. This is good advice. You could also just drain the transmission if you have never changed the fluid.

You didn't mention if you dropped the exhaust. Doing that will make this job a lot easier. I'm not sure you could do it without, actually...

when you remove the drive shaft a neat way of covering the hole up it to use the top from a spray paint can and a rubber glove slipped over it to hold it in place.

Yes, exhaust has to be dropped in order to remove the transmission. at least the cat's and mid pipe need to come out. Headers and muffler can stay in.
