turn it It'll turn, but make sure you check it for set screws, etc that might be holding it on...

just grab it with your hands and crank on it, and if that doesn't work, try everything in the house that you think might help. I used one of those rubber-band looking things from Sears to fix mine, 'cause it was cranked on like mad. Remember though, Right Tight, Left Loose

I didnt see any set screws on there....

There's a metal part right below the **** that has a set of parell sides... If I remember this allowed me to get my automatic shifter off.

I tried turning it and it felt like It would break I'f I turned it anymore.

oh, you gotta turn the bottom lock nut to the right, in effect tightening it, to loosen it off the bottom of the ****... then unscrew the ****. I forgot about the locking nut, as I have a '79 without one.

ok now when I tried turning it today... it seemed to have a middle area of free play... before turning it in either direction

I tried turning it to the right, and it felt like the hole stick was going to tear out of the car....

Also I'm not sure the transmission is from an 85, it could be any year that has a 5 speed.

All the people knew at pineapple is that it was a 12a, but had no idea what year it came out of.

same way you rotate a screwdriver. you grab ahold and turn (and i donot mean turn yourself like you would when spining with your head pressed against something stationary when you are drunk)

Ok, did you figure it out? If not, here's what you have to do...

Turn the lock nut clockwise until it's down and outta the way

Then turn the shift **** itself counter-clockwise until it's off.

Sit back, have a beer, and ask yourself why it took almost 2 days to figure out how to get a stupid shifter **** off of it's shaft....

Sorry, I was going to make a new thread but then changed my mind...LOL

I did get the **** off... only after putting the **** in a vice, and then getting a crecent wrench to turn the nut.

After I got it off, I discovered that the threads in both of them were rusted.. and the ones in the ****, were cracked, twisted and destroyed.

I guess that would explain why it was so hard to remove the damn thing.

Looks like I'll need a new **** now!

Good time to get a nice, shiny, polished aluminum one, or perhaps a carbon fibre one.... update the look of your interior
