She runs!!!!!!
So after months of issues with my FB (April 2011: front and rear rotor blew at DGRR; August 2011: spun front main bearing) my $60 CL rebuilt motor fired yesterday. The first start was open header, in a small, one bay garage at my apartment in Ann Arbor. My GF (who isn't into cars) was spraying ether into the carb when I wasn't pulling on the choke cable, and after about 20 seconds of spinning the motor, it caught and fired. She promptly scurried out of the garage because of the noise and the smoke.
She came back in and gave it another shot of ether after I shut it down, and I made sure it wasn't a fluke, and it fired off again.
After about 2 seconds of running I shut her off again (open header....didn't want a noise complaint) and pushed the car out of the garage. I bolted up my exhaust and tried to get her to start w/o ether. Very fast startup.
I kept her running for 3-4 minutes to get oil throughout the engine and then shut her down because our guests for the evening had arrived.
I went inside and showered, and while I was in the shower, my girlfriend came in and said this:
You may want to get out of the shower. The neighbor just knocked on the door and said that the fire department is on their way. They think the garage is on fire.
I thought they were messing with me.
I was wrong.
About 10 minutes post-shutdown, two police cars, a pumper truck, and a couple of fire-department issue pickup trucks arrived. There were about 10 fire fighters, and a battalion commander at my apartment.
I know the battalion commander....I was in boy scouts with his kids...
I went out and explained what it was, and he just shook his head and they left.
I should have known something bad was going to happen when there was a 70' column of smoke eminating from my car/garage, but how was I supposed to know that the neighbor was going to call the cops?
So it runs. I had the fire department called on me. It was fun.
Now my question: Why is my accelerator pump not getting any fuel?
I rebuilt the carb. with the recommended kit, and everything soaked in ChemDip during the rebuild. the body was in ChemDip for about 7 days (while I was at school).
I am not getting any fuel out of the AP nozzle. I pulled the AP cover and was expecting to find 2-3 oz of fuel in it. It was wet with fuel, but barely any fuel was coming into it from the bowls. Any ideas?
Thanks
-Jim

First, congrats.
Second, the AP is fed from the rear float bowl, via a passage near the bottom left of the bowl. It passes thru a covered vertical well that has a check ball and weight in it. These serve to prevent fuel from just getting squeezed back into the bowl when the AP is actuated.
If you didn't remove the ball and weight when you chemdipped the body, it may just still be there but rusted/gooped in place. I played hell getting my checkball out of my carb after it sat for a few years - - was totally gummed up. ended up dislodging it with a magnetized ice pick, very carefully.
If you did pull them and reinstall them, the channel that serves them may have a blockage, or you may have put the wrong weight (OR BOTH WEIGHTS - IT'S HAPPENED) in the wrong hole. Take the ball and weight back out, then use compressed air and/or vinyl-coated flexible wire to see if you can feed thru the holes.

Here are the two pictures of the fire department at my apartment. The short guy by the drivers side of the car is Jim, the guy that I know.
I'll check out the passage between the rear bowl and the AP. I pulled all of the check ***** and weights when I rebuilt the motor.
Thanks.

That's pretty dang funny right there. I've had the cops called on me from my neighbor after I pulled an all nighter putting an engine in my friends Vert that I had built for him. How was I supposed to know that thier bedroom is right beside my garage? O'well Congrats

lol, congrats Jim!
You must have called me before the Heat arrived. lmao. At least it didn't turn out that your car was actually on fire, now that you finally got it started. Looking forward to some great racing again this year...
