She passed!

Well the car I bought 3 weeks ago as a basketcase....and not running, is now running and just passed her tx state emmissions test on the first time. Im wondering if the tach is off...and thats why she wont idle right....cuz at 1500rpm on the tach...it idles great...any lower and forget it.

Congrats!

Try hooking up an external tach and see. Usually the stock tachs read okay in the lower rpm, but can be off up high.

Congrats on reviving the car to a running state. Even harder to do, considering you actually got it to pass the emission test on the first try.
Here is an idea, try running some pour thru carb cleaner in a tank of gas. This will help to insure the entire fuel system is free of old crud, including the small passages inside the carb. That sure helped mine, and it had only sat for about 8 months in an impound yard.

Yeah I was surprised since I had only put maybe 15 miles on her since I got her running. I am currently waiting for my new air filter to come in and we shall see if that helps. I put a bunch of stuff in the tank....fuel stabilizer, carb cleaner...ect. Ima run the whole thing through before I get worried at all. I know it has sat for a while...and you can feel it when stuff gets blown out the carb....sorta takes off on ya. Im also gonna change the spark plugs again probably.....or just pull these and clean them up....since their nice expensive NGK +4's

You could put a cheaper set of autolites in, for a bit. This would prevent fouling the NGK's while still trying to get all the old crud "blown out". Mine had a set of autolites in it, when I bought it. I left them in for about a month, while driving it daily. After that, I put in a fresh set of NGK's. The autolites do not have the 4 side electrodes, and *should* be a little more resistant to fouling, although many here will argue about that point. They are also 1/2 (or even less) the cost of NGK's.

Autolites tend to do internal motor damage, if I remember right. Something about them being too big and chipping the seals or something?

It was a big debate about a year ago when I joined the club.

I'm really surprised you passed as you have it! Must've been that exhaust.

Eh, all I know is that my car REFUSES to run with anything but NGK.
I dunno what the big deal is. NGK are about ten bucks for a box of four. . . .
