AK She just wont start...

So, hokay.

Last time i drove my RX-7 was when i moved it from the car port to its parking spot. It was kinda cold (more or less freezing, damn that alaskan weather) so she did her usual waaah i dont want to start but i will anyways. Fired up, moved it, turned it off.

Well, the other day, i went and wanted to drive around in it. Wouldn't start. I thought i was out of gas because last winter it got so cold my fuel gauge stopped working so i put in a gallon. Still nothing. Ooookay.... Went and got some quick start fluid, had my step dad spray that in straight into the carburetor while I cranked it over... She fired... For about a second, and then died. Kept doing that for about 20 minutes but still nothing. So, i pulled out the spark plugs to look at them, and they were pretty bad, but, they still fire.... I think its fuel delivery problems, any thoughts?

Probably just flooded, but you might want to change your fuel filter just to be sure. To deflood it, I like to dump a little Seafoam down the carb. They'll usually start right up then. Starter fluid usually doesn't work.

If you can't get ahold of Seafoam up in BFE, then use a couple caps full of motor oil down the carb to restore compression, then start her up. This will probably foul the plugs though, so they will need to be replaced. Good luck!

pour 1/8th to 1/4th cup of dry gas (100% methanol or isopropanol) straight down the carburator. This usually works for me.

Or you can remove the plugs, re-attach them to the wires, ground them, and turn the engine over. This way you can check to see if they are firing, clean them, and clean out rotary chambers of moisture, and excess gas and oil.

Another trick is to pour a little bit of oil down each primary carb barrel.

Man, I hear you about our weather - where the $#^@! is spring up here??
make sure your fuel pump is ticking over - you should hear it behind you under the floor with ignition on - when was the last time you changed the fuel filter? Was it parked all winter? Take any storage precautions?

To tell the truth, i have no idea when the last time the fuel filter was changed. Ive had the car for about 2 years but i never did drive it much. It was parked pretty much all winter so far, but the times before this that i started it and ran it it did just fine. I had it sitting in a heated garage for about 2 weeks though.

Try taking out the plugs,, turning it over a few times,, then putting em back in and firing it.,,,,, I was just down in Kenai last weekend. My buddy's aunt and uncle live down there. I live in Anchorage *Army*. Like 7Aull said, make sure you can hear the fuel pump,, although if she's sputtered, that's probably working.

She sputtered and to hear the fuel pump id have to get a stethoscope, my exhaust is so loud. Well, next time you're down here let me know. I'd love to meet a fellow Alaskan RX-7 owner. We are pretty rare here. I only know of 3 more RX-7's around here. Ones in Ninilchik, Black and gold 83 12A. Theres a white 84 thats pretty much the same as mine, just its all stock and someone around here has a beat down 2nd get and this kid does not know how to take care of car. Almost cried when i heard he bought one, such a waste.

I've seen a TON of these little guys lately. There's even a turbo 2 for sale on craigs list. I have seen about 4 second gens and about a dozen first. There's actually an 82 in Kenai right now that JUST got there the other day. I know this because it used to be in Anchorage and I looked into getting it, but the rust was bad in all the wrong places. Heated garage huh, man I'd kill for that right about now!

Thats what I usually do. Pull the Fuel Pump fuse, take out the plugs and clean them. Leave them out and spin the motor over for about 3-5 seconds and wait a few minutes. Repeat, then reinstall everything.

If it's not running then the exhaust noise shouldn't be an issue.
The fuel pump can and should be heard with the ignition in the on position, before cranking it up.

Fuel pump can only be heard with the ignition on in the <83 models, 84-85 you have to crank for the fuel pump to work
